PIRATES' top gun Jason Crump admitted his anguish after he was forced to withdraw from tonight's Elite League Riders' Championship at King's Lynn.

Crump took a knock to his recently repaired left kneecap while riding for Swedish club Vetlanda at Hammarby on Tuesday evening.

The world champion raced through the pain barrier last night, bagging a 14 paid 15-point maximum to help Poole record a vital 50-43 triumph over Swindon at Wimborne Road.

His withdrawal hands Pirates' King's Lynn asset Troy Batchelor, who celebrated his 20th birthday yesterday, a late present, as he replaces his team-mate in the field.

But it means Crump will not have the chance to defend the Elite League Riders' title he claimed at Poole last year.

The Aussie, who also won the event in 1999 and 2001, said: "The ELRC is always a meeting I have done well in.

"So it's disappointing that I won't get the chance to defend the title.

"But at this stage of the season, I would rather save my big performances for the Pirates.

"And hopefully, Bjarne or Troy can bring the trophy back to Wimborne Road."

Despite not crashing at the Stockholm track, a bumpy racing surface put pay to Crump's glued kneecap.

The swelling was so severe that the Australian national champion was offered the chance to pull out of last night's Robins clash by Poole track doctor Nigel Sharp.

This was never an option, though, for the dedicated Crump.

He added: "I didn't fall off in Sweden but the track was a little bit rough and I knocked the knee going into one of the bends.

"It swelled up overnight and the doctor at Poole had a look at it while I was there.

"As soon as he saw the swelling, he wouldn't have hesitated to pull me out of the meeting, if I had asked him to.

"But the bottom line was this was a huge match and I was never going to ask to sit it out.

"I'll be going up to see my specialist in London today, though, to have it fully checked over."

This is pretty pathetic isn't it! All riders with apparently genuine reasons for pulling out and yet one can't help but wonder how many of them would have pulled out if it had been a GP. Once this meeting was the most prestigious meeting in the world after the world final. Now, it seems as if it is just another fixture to the riders in an already crowded fixture list. If there was a real and strong 'desire' for riders to ride in the meeting, as there is in the GP's, would we have seen so many withdrawals? I wonder how many more will pull out before tonight?

Where is Andreas Jonsson? Is he not fit? Why is he not representing Lakeside? Was he asked? I most certainly hope he was!

Will the price be reduced to reflect the watered-down line up? No Crump is a huge loss.

Anybody seen any odds issued yet for this farce?

If Nicki is better than 2/1 i'm getting on!!

you will be lucky if he's bigger than that,

Only betfair have prices so far, Nicki is 2/1 on there,

with riders dropping out all the time the big firms will not price up the meeting until around 5-6pm

Stick Dooley in then. Would rather watch him round KL than Screen or Stead anyway. :P

Shame about Crump, seems a case of hurrying an injury through and paying the consequences. Hope he recovers quickly.

**Edit, just read on Official BV site that Screen is hoping to ride afterall.

World Speedway Champion, Jason Crump, has been forced to withdraw from tonights Elite League Riders Championship due to an inflamed knee, Crump is upset he has had to withdraw ‘I rode last night for Poole but it got worse and worse, I hate to let the fans down but I feel that if I ride it could lead to bigger problems, I must let it rest!’, the good new for fans is that Jason Crumps fellow Australian team mate, Troy Batchelor, will replace him in the line up ‘King’s Lynn is my former track and I earlier in the season I racked up a maximum there, my riding ability has come on even more since then and hopefully I can do my club proud!’ said an excited Batchelor.

There are a few other minor changes with Freddie Lindgren replacing the injured Peter Karlson and Adam Shields replacing Niels Krister Iversen, also another ex home favorite is Travis McGowan coming in to replace Matej Zagar. Series director Jonathan chapman says this should be the final line up ‘As of Midday today we have phoned all the riders to confirm they will be here, the only slight doubt is Joe Screen who is still not 100% fit, if he does pull out then track reserve and local hero Tomas Topinka will take his place, so all in all it really should be an entertaining meeting for the fans and one that I really am looking forward to!’

What price on Topinka to win the ELRC?

I can see it now, somebody drops out at 3pm, TT comes in and storms to victory.

That would take a bit of explaining on SKY
