DonsFanSW
I read somewhere about a 1985 final involving Kenny Carter which was highly controversial (the meeting was controversial, i don't think it was anything directly to do with Kenny). I think it was the British final, but I can't remember where i read about it and I was hoping someone could fill me in on the details and what the controversy was all about. f-s-p
Isn't this the one from Coventry? Buy the book about it! See top of page...
Grachan
I guess this was the one when Carter rode with a broken leg and the track was very wet. Most riders wanted the meeting called off, but Carter insisted it was okay to race and proceeded to take the meeting by storm and won it in style. Apparently there were quite a few confrontations in the dressing room between Carter and other riders.
SuzieQ
I actually have this meeting on Video and recently copied it off onto DVD! Although I was never really a Kenny Carter fan, my admiration for the guy that year grew immensely! What he achieved on the track whilst riding with that broken leg was nothing short of amazing! How the Collins brothers tried to cut him up in one race still sticks in my mind with Kenny finding a way past them both! The two best parts were when Gary Newbond commented on the track and the weather and Kenny said how it was "P'ing down" (yes he did say the full word) and Gary just said "so it was raining then?" at which point Kenny realises what he has just said on TV and just grinned! Then after Kenny has won the Championship and is being interviewed you just see Wiggy's arm grab his shoulder and hear the words "You F'in deserved it!" (again thw full word used) but to me it showed that atleast someone was behind him in the meeting to do well! Throughout so much of the extremely waterlogged track meeting you hear interviews from John Louis etc all whinning about the track conditions and how it should be cancelled! Yet a little northern guy wiped the floor with the lot of them with his gammy leg! Now I am gonna have to sit and watch that again!
Gemini
Apparently there were quite a few confrontations in the dressing room between Carter and other riders..... And I bet the Collins brothers were at the head of the queue. Wasn't this the meeting where they tried to team ride to keep Carter behind in one race but he passed both of them? Pity there aren't more English riders around now like Kenny, willing to get stuck in on a wet track. Most these days take one look and give up before they start. Edit....you've just answered my question SuzieQ. Posted at same time. Throughout so much of the extremely waterlogged track meeting you hear interviews from John Louis etc all whinning about the track conditions and how it should be cancelled! Ah....that explains where that whinger Chris gets it from whenever the track is a bit wet. Edited July 20, 2007 by Gemini
