spiderweb
Anyone think that the SPG will ever become a Full time series for the riders Involved? If they expand the series with a couple of overseas rounds could it sustain riders just riding in the series full time? Most other forms of top line motor sport do this and the current situation with the riders in a couple of teams pluss the SGP must take its toll. Russell
I don't think there is enough money involved in the GP series for it to become sustainable sports like Moto GP get hundreds of thousands of fans over 2 or 3 days turning up and huge sponsorship deals. They also get works factory teams because development is relevant to road bikes. Even in smaller series based in Britain like the British touring cars there is still lots of money invloved. When they do, they'll come against the powerful vested interests, such as the all-powerful Polish league. I suspect that'll be the beginning of the end of IMG's infatuation with speedway and John Postlethwaite.
mp2
A lot of people are saying SGP will become like F1 now that IMG have assumed control, but I just can't see it. We'll see the number of GPs increase, I think that's a given, but full time World Grand Prix riders? Not at this stage. While you can draw comparisons between SGP, F1 and Moto-GP, the fact of the matter is, I can go and buy a Speedway bike with a GM Engine quite similar to that used by a GP rider and ride at my local track. Fact. I CAN'T go and buy Lewis Hamilton's McLaren or Colin Edwards' Yamaha and go race them. The riders need their regular weekly Speedway and IMG need the riders from the lower leagues to develop. Boomer
I think it would be great if the GP's paid enough for the riders to concentrate on them. It would solve all the problems that a lot of the people on here think are caused by the GP riders. It won't be cheaper because the guys behind the GP riders in your team will now want the same pay as the GP rider. Maybe then big open meetings will be a good draw for the promoters, get 8 or 10 GP riders against the top local riders once a month in each country (England, Poland, Sweden) sprinkle in a few more around Europe (Russia) along with a GP every fortnight and the guys would be plenty busy without the outlay of airfares, bikes, vans, mechanics, and workshops everywhere, the economics would probably look alright too at the end of the season. I hope the new guys can help the riders with attracting sponsorship, something that BSI said they would do. Instead they went to the rider's sponsors and inticed them to spend their money in the GP's rather than the rider they were sponsoring. A real low class act by a first class BS'r.
