BOBBATH
I'm interested in which of the 1949 World Finalists are still alive.By my reckoning there are 2 for sure: Louis Lawson and Cyril Roger and I'm not sure about 2 others-Lloyd Goffe and Cliff Watson. I 'm sure the rest have passed away: Tommy Price,Jack Parker,Norman Parker,Wilbur Lamoreaux,Bill Kitchen,Ron Clarke, Bill Longley,Aub Lawson,Bill Gilbert,Graham Warren, Ken LeBreton and Dent Oliver.Could someone in forum land enlighten me about the four names at the start and confirm who is still with us. I assume any of the pre-war World Finalists have all left us now.

norbold
Yes, Louis Lawson and Cyril Roger are still with us. I am almost certain that Cliff Watson isn't, but not 100%. Vic Duggan, who qualified for the 1939 final, is still alive. Though, of course he didn't ride in it because it wasn't held! Also Jack Ormston, who rode in the first-ever final in 1936, is still alive. Edited June 21, 2007 by norbold
BOBBATH
Thanx Norbold-so that would mean Jack Ormston is the last surviving pre-war finalist who actually rode in a WF.I thought Cliff Watson was gone also but like you not 100% sure
norbold
so that would mean Jack Ormston is the last surviving pre-war finalist who actually rode in a WF. Yes and not only that but Jack Ormston also qualified for the 1930 Star Riders' Final (the forerunner of the World Championship) and came second in the 1935 Star Riders' Final. Gordon Byers qualified for the 1932 Star Riders' Final. He is also still alive. Edited June 21, 2007 by norbold

chunky
Sad news: I see Jack Ormston died last Friday. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's very sad to lose one our pre-war stars, but I do think it is wonderful that we managed to get such coverage in the Telegraph. Jack deserves it. Steve Edited June 26, 2007 by chunky
BOBBATH
What a shame but what a wonderful obit for Jack. That means I guess that the two longest surviving(not necessarily oldest) World Finalists are Louis Lawson and Cyril Roger from 1949 World Final. May they be with us for many more years
