Return To The Old Ways Or . . . .

Recommended Posts

It never ceases to amaze me that no matter what the topic some threads are contstantly hi-jacked by the one off v gp's debaters.

Soooooooooooo ..............................

I personally dont like the GP's.

No matter how much they are dressed and glam'd up by whoever I just cant get excited about the gp's and some of these 'down one minute gone the next' tracks.

And on top of this in recent years one of the few meetings I used to look forward to was the British Final is nothing but a glorified open meeting and has lost its meaning.

im not saying the 'old ways' were the best far from it but prior to them ending I thought the powers that be were getting it right.

Brit,overseas,inter-continental, 2 semi's and the final seems an excellent format to me.

Just my personal ramblings -

Ok its over to you lot.

P.s. please refrain from telling me this topic has been done before as im not bothered - well worth another debate.

Totally agree with you dont know if its me getting older but the GPs will never match a World Final, I used to love the old british finals when only 5 would get through to the next round 75-78 all great Finals, also I liked the old intercontinenal final and overseas finals they were always exciting.

The other thing I liked about the old style world championship was most riders at the start of the season could end up world champion I konw that most didnt have a chance in hell but it was achance, now we know it going to be one of fifteen.

Also with the gps in the last couple of years we know whos going to win it after the first few rounds, having said that I will be at cardiff and yes I do enjoyed it But

it will not match Wembley on a World Final Night :)

I have to say that I was one who was not in favour of the GP's from the beginning - I went to 2 GP's at Cardiff and saw nothing to change my opinion. I predicted that they would be the end of team speedway as we knew it. come the revolution Ole Olsen will be first up against the wall IMHO!

As I said on another tread the GP'S have RUINED British league s/way IMO and I too loved the old system but sadly it will never return.

Yeah yeah, we keep hearing that but nobody has ever given a reasonable explaination as to how!

I say the Poles are a bigger pain, they take every Sunday (and some Mondays and even other various days) rather than just 11 Saturdays (and Fridays if the rider wishes) and they ban rider from riding over here unlike the GP's. BAN RIDERS ON PZM PERMITS!!!

Welcome to the 21st Century. IMO IMG is a step in the right direction for getting the product on a true world stage like F1, MotoGP etc. Like it or not the old one-off is gone for good, and the rider who is the most consistent over the whole season will be the Champion. Sure IMG will benefit, they're not in it for charity are they? The other party that will benefit most is of course the Riders; can't see anything wrong with that, can you?

Every Rider who's ever jumped on the back of a speedway bilke dreams of being World Champ, just ask them. They'd also like to make the Dollars commensurate with the risks they take for our entertainment, don't forget they're sub-contractors; their first loyalty is to themselves.

All this "lets go back to the intensely parochial so-called Good Old Days" guff is not worth the air they blow into the safety fences. Its Time to move on and get with the program; making Speedway more accessible and acceptable to a Global Audience. There's big money out there - Dale Earnhart Junior rakes in over $20 Million Dollars a year just in Merchandising alone and he's just a NASCAR Driver.

Jason Crump will make a Motza this year and good on him, but in comparison to the Alonsos and Rossis he's on Peanuts. Lets give him and all our other Heroes the chance at least rather than slagging it off before its started.

Its about time we had a regular US and Oz GP on the Calendar, not to mention Dubai and Seth Africa and even India -d'you know how many Motorcyclists there are on the sub-continent? People the world over want the chance to see the best riders on the planet, and who are we to gainsay them.

This is known, Fast, as the progressive regression system of government.

I intensely dislike the GP system. One of the problems with the rulers of 'our sport' is that will insist on apeing the more prominent sports ; hence the not only the GP system from Formula 1 motor racing but, also, the naming of speedway leagues after those of association football i.e. Premier League [Premiership] and Conference League.

Conference League, in either sport, I fail to understand. A conference is, surely, a gathering of people to confer [talk] but not necessarily achieve much. Under the present system of control in speedway perhaps the BSPA should be replaced by the British Speedway Promoters Conference!

I jest?

Ron.

Ive never liked th GP series, much prefered the tension of the big night during the days of the one off final. The atmosphere of Cardiff is great but you dont actually get a result from the meeting, last year there was no excitement at all with Crump walking it, how often is it going to go down to the wire in this series? Its ok saying the expansion of the GP,s puts speedway on a par with formula 1 and moto cross, these sports dont run a bread and butter league which will in the end suffer badly from the omission of the top riders as they chase GP glory. I remember the British Final being a great meeting with meaning. Compare Collins, Louis, Carter, Jessup, Lee, Morton, Boocock, Simmons, Wilson, etc with the line up at monmore, no comparison at all, neither is there between the one off or GP for me. With all the GP exposure the terraces remain the same, the series certainly hasnt had new fans running to the turnstiles. With the omission of so many top riders in the future the reverse will soon be evident im afraid.
