captain
Do you know the track record, holder and date set please? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi Kev...... Barrow finished at Holker St. end of 1974. The track was round football pitch......370yds (338metres). Tom Owen set the record 67.6 secs on 21/5/74. Might be wrong, but don't think it was beaten...... 2ndBender
No worries, perhaps someone else might have that info? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Â The record at Park Road when they closed in '85 was 59.73, set by Nigel Sparshott on 23.04.85. Pretty good going on a 280 metre track which only staged open licence racing.

They were in the second division in 1978 and 1985 (admittedly only racing three meetings), and also in 1981 Berwick used the venue to stage six meetings. Kent Boy
They were also still at Holker Street in 1978
Kent Boy
My mistake. There is a Barrow Speedway website.

They were in the second division in 1978 and 1985 (admittedly only racing three meetings), and also in 1981 Berwick used the venue to stage six meetings. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Â What I meant was that by the time they closed, they had lost their league status and were staging open licence racing, mostly at almost junior level. Workington were doing the same in '85. Â When you consider that Sparshott's time was set 22 years ago, it compares very favourably with today's times. I always understood that the Park Road track, although small, was a great shape which lent itself to fast racing. Shame it didn't last. KevH
OK, I'm with you now 2ndBender, and I'd certainly concur with your closing line - shame it didn't last. Â With all the positive talk of old tracks reopening, is there any hope of a revival up Barrow way?
Subedei
The Park Road track record in 1978 was held by John Jackson at 56.8 seconds.
KevH
The Park Road track record in 1978 was held by John Jackson at 56.8 seconds. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm puzzled now, 2ndBender previously posted that in 1985 the track record was 59.7......... I believe the track was extended by six yards in 1984, so are these the two records for the different track lengths? Â BTW Sube, do you have the date Jacko set that time please? Subedei
According to Mr Oakes' fine "Daily Mirror 1979 Speedway Year Book", the details are as follows: Â Track length: 300 yards - 274 metres Track record: 56.8 seconds, John Jackson (Ellesmere Port), July 25, 1978. It looks very much like Ellesmere Port won that meeting 35-43, with young Jackson scoring a 12 point maximum, as did team mate Phil Collins. 2ndBender
Sorry for the confusion KevH. I got my information from the last ever Barrow programme from '85. I wasn't aware that the track was a different length in '78, but on checking a programme, that is indeed the case.
