What Do We Know About Wroclaw

Recommended Posts

No Mateusz, 1992 World Final...unbelievable weather, very hot then very wet and cold, then very hot again :D

After a massive shower, caused by one small cloud...the track nearly a metre under water on the inside (!) and the Polish army boys came and got rid of it all, like magic B)

Personally, not a fan of Wrocław city.

Still had plenty of good times at the speedway though...including one very memorable incident with Nicki and Ronni Pedersen :D:D:D

Ok. I thought about the GP in 1997 as it had been raining the whole day so the track was floating but somehow they managed to sort it out. All vehicles went onto the track (ambulances, vans, ad cars etc.) and finally the meeting started about 10 pm, finished about 1 am.

It was 10 years ago, I was 10 and it was my first speedway away :approve: I still remember a lot from this. Late 90s were Gollob's best years. I got to Wroclaw by car with my uncle and dad. Almost every car on the way had Bydgoszcz plates and Polonia or Polska scarfs in rear windows :) In the middle of the journey we encountered a huge tree fallen on the road.. Firemen had their hands full that day so Gollob's white-red army jumped out of their cars and moved the tree off the road together :D It was a memorable, great trip. We felt like riders on the storm

Yeah me too, and wasn't that rain bloody cold?

Veeeery impressive the way they cleared the water off the track afterwards though.

Yeah, I was there too and that's what I remember. They jumped into action like they did this sort of thing everyday. We gave all our remaing billions and millions zlotys to the them after the meeting. Was probably only a few quid.

Any 1 know if there is a league match at wroclaw the day after the GP?

No there isn't. There were no league matches scheduled for that weekend (probably because of Under-21 qualifiers taking place around Europe)

Shame really. I'm sure I read somewhere that Torun are racing on the Sunday, but its a fair old trek there.

A non-speedway What Do We Know About Wroclaw.

Just as a random aside allow me to share a few words from a book I've been reading. Wroclaw has a famous zoo, which to this day is held in very high regard.

NB Breslau (as Wroclaw was known then) is one of the many names the city has taken on in the past and at the time the paragraph refers to, it was part of Prussia.

Breslau Zoo offered similar attractions, but with one very particular twist. There, humankind was on display. The "People Shows" (Volkerschauen) began in 1874 with the display of a Nubian tribe from the Sudan. The exhibits lived in enclosudres and were encouraged to behave and dress as 'normally' as possible and to give displays of tribal dancing and ritual. The show was such a success that numerous other displays followed: Australian Aboriginals in 1882, Sudanese Dinka in 1894, Kalmyks froms Astrakhan in 1897, Ashantis from the Gold Coast in 1899 and the Futa people of Guinea in 1906. The Vratislavian would have been amazed titillated and perhaps even repulsed but in the Age of Imperialism, their feelings of superiority over ther worl's non-white races would have been unaffected. The implicit offence of holding such displays in a zoo would never have crossed their minds.

The book itself is quite interesting, if a little heavy, detailing the history of Wroclaw from when it's first inhabitants settle up to modern day.

I don't have the faintest idea. What's more, my friend Mama, who's a speedway authority for me and a few others, hasn't heard about it either... So I reason that such place may even not exist :o

HI Mateusz, do you know where the speedway bar is, apparently it is under a railway arch I think. Do you know the name of the place please.

It's called Speedway Pub and HERE you can go on the website.

The address is ul. Bogusławskiego 67

(under the railway arch, at the back of the old cinema "Śląsk") It's in the city centre, close to central railway and bus station.

PICTURE here

Hope that helps :)

Wroclaw may not quite be up to Bydgoszcz for racing but the city is great especially the square. Sunshine, great atmosphere, speedway and hopefully sunny days, just what we need. :)

Have to agree, I though the City was great, the atmosphere around the stadium was very good too.....plenty of bars and entertainment when I went (final Polish League match for Wroclaw v Czesterchowa)

I saw some good racing too, but almost had my night ruined by a drunk who lost his balance on the bench seat behind me....good job it wasn't a kid he fell on, the bloke was big.....lol

We were told about it but never got there. We were staying at the Holiday Inn on Pilsudskiego and it was on the street behind the hotel. It isn't far from the railway station and there is a market at the far end.

When I started this thread, all I wanted to know about was results from the place but reading the stories and the camaradery amongst speedway fans it really is a pleasure to have started the thread. I especially like the story about the gollob fans moveing the tree.

My first trip to speedway was Hackney when I was very young and my dad did not know where the track was, we stopped to ask someone who said, thats where im going, so my dad gave him a lift (nothing to do with Wroclaw but just thought id share it with you)

Can I just ask one of the Q's I mentioned earlier with regard to any track changes in recent years as there seems a shift in gate supremacy, or possibly even if there has been weather affected GP's the last two years which may explain the shift away from Red

Thanks

For those who have an interest in matters which extend beyond the price of a beer, I strongly recommend a visit to the Panorama. This large painting is a representation of the Battle of Racławice and is absolutely stunning. The painting can be found on the ul. Purkyniego, and is well signposted.

And don't forget Wroclaw was also the venue where Bobby M won the World U21 Final.

Maybe it will be easier to say that it's exactly in front of Radisson Hotel where many forum members are staying or used to stay in the past. :)

For these who don't know where the Radisson is, Panorama Racławicka can be found very close to Galeria Dominikańska - the big shopping centre. So if you happen to do your shopping there it's worth seeing the painting as well :)
