Professor
I am lucky enough to emigrating to New Zealand in 2months time (although unlucky to never get to watch the Eagles in person) Well for a year anyhow, and maybe stay-on if work there seems successful. Yet i have not even visited NZ yet, so i was wondering if anyone had any experience of NZ and speedway viewing there. Both in amount of actual league speedway and is there much to see weekly/monthly etc? And probably more importantly do they have much if any Speedway on television, i am of course thinking mainly of the SGP and World Cups and well any chance of English/European leagues being on TV or Satelite there. I know Speedway is clearly big in Oz, but wondered if i am likely to get any speedway fix in Kiwi-Land. If anyone has any experience would be good to hear.. nz kiwi
I think I can answer some of your questions, I am living in Auckland. Speedway here is dominated by car racing which unfortunately means heavy and sticky clay track surfaces for the bikes. This means that unless you are watching at a bike only track you are unlikely to see much good bike racing. There are a huge number of tracks here but most of them don't run bikes. Auckland, Invercargill, Christchurch and Napier all have good bike tracks. There is no league racing as such. There have been some good attempts at getting a league started but costs have been prohibitive. You will get to see the GP's eventually on SKY. The first ones will not be shown here until well into the European season. Some people do have them taped and sent over so they may be available that way with a contribution towards postage perhaps. Do you know where you will be living here? I can then let you know the tracks nearest to you although a lot of them have finished their fixtures for this year. I can then also give you some website addresses to have a look.

BigFatDave
G'day Prof! What are you going to the Land of the Long White Shroud for? Its cold & wet and Fulla Kiwis! Mind you, Oz is Fulla Kiwis too, but at least its warmer! Of course its 30 years since I was there but with Global Warming you never know! Don't want to disillusion you but Solo Speedway is not that big in Oz, M8, goes for about 4 months a year in a few far-flung Venues, most Speedway tracks are set up for Sprintcars & Late Models i.e. Clay. The Ozchamps is a real shot in the arm for Bikers & Fans with a 5 match series over about a fortnight; this allows time for travel etc between centres, Adelaide - Sydney is a good day's drive, 20 hour minimum. Anyhow, enjoy your trip to Kiwiland and book your holiday to fit the Ozchamps in! Just practise saying "Fush 'n Chups".
