Parsloes 1928 nearly
QUOTE (Vincent Vega @ Mar 5 2007, 08:04 PM) From all my visits to Hoddesden over the years the best 7 sparklers to don the famous yellow and blue jacket in my humble opinion have been. 1. Carl Chalcraft 2 Trevor O'Brien 3 Jamie Fagg 4 Wayne Baxter 5 Scott Humphries 6 Justin Elkins 7 Kevin Brice What a line up eh warms the cockles of yer jam tart thinking of this cracking team Good to see Justin Elkins listed. A rider badly treated by many in the sport - just needed the right sort of advice and handling to be really great. Er, I think Vincent's original posting was ironic..?! Justin certainly could on the odd occasion cut the mustard I'll give you that, but his last 15 rides at Plough Lane (for the Dons then Weymouth) saw him simply stay at the gate so I'd respectfully suggest there was more wrong than just some questionable machinery. At other times (when he actually, er, got to the first corner of a race, every time he was passed (even if leading when passed) he would pull out of the race... Not the stuff of 'greatness'...! norbold
QUOTE (Parsloes 1928 nearly @ Mar 20 2007, 03:04 PM) Around the same time he struggled without success to break into the Wimbledon side too didn't he..?? Just goes to show that no-one needs to be an overnight success to make it to the very top in the end.... Gives hope to the likes of Billy Legg, Nick Simmons and Benji Compton and may others. Still waiting....

Parsloes 1928 nearly
Yes - I'm puzzled too - I must have missed something. Right, I'm thinking my quote was referring to Ivan Mauger...?
norbold
Yes, if you just take the trouble to look back in the thread you will see that spin king quoted your remark about Ivan Mauger, which said, "Around the same time he struggled without success to break into the Wimbledon side too didn't he..?? Just goes to show that no-one needs to be an overnight success to make it to the very top in the end...." He then added: "Gives hope to the likes of Billy Legg, Nick Simmons and Benji Compton and may others." So I said "Still waiting..." which was a reference to the fact that we are still waiting for Billy Legg, Nick Simmons and Benji Compton making it to the very top. Jeez, this is hard going sometimes. Hmm, but Legg, Simmons & the younger Compton seems a pretty random selection of individuals to compare with Ivan Mauger! Maybe in 2008 or whenever this now ancient posting was made it was rather more current!!!
