spin king
Around the same time he struggled without success to break into the Wimbledon side too didn't he..?? Just goes to show that no-one needs to be an overnight success to make it to the very top in the end.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Gives hope to the likes of Billy Legg, Nick Simmons and Benji Compton and may others. norbold
I think Mauger also turned out for Eastbourne in those days Indeed he did, sg. He made his debut at Arlington in the Championship of Sussex on 4 August 1957. In his first race he came 3rd behind Leo McAuliffe and Ray Cresp, but he went on to score 7 points, including a heat win over Ross Gilbertson. TwoMinuteWarning
Ivan was only 17 when he arrived here in 1957, and already married to Raye. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last month on the Gold Coast.

speedyguy
Hmm, have you been inhaling the smoke on the top deck of the bus in Streatham again..??!! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Perhaps I misunderstood your comment on Justin Elkins. I always thought he was a much better rider than many gave him credit for. And, but for "too much tinkering" with his bikes, which often caused him problems, that he could have been a really big star in the sport. I certainly liked him in his brief spell as a Wimbledon rider back in 2002. Or am I, as usual, a lone voice?

psymon
I still remember Ashley Pullen's first ride at Rye House. He didn't have any boots and he rode with shoes done up with gaffa tape. The supporters club had to buy him boots for the next meeting. My top team would be Karl Fiala Bobby G Kelvin Mullarkey Marvyn Cox Kevin Smith Bob Cooper Ashley Pullen with honourble mention to Ted Hubbard (who could ride the third bend like no one else), Hughie Saunders (who knew a mysterious ouside line that no one else knew) Andy Fines (just because I remember him once doing nothing in a meeting except gating first to lead home a 5-1 that snatched a home victory against Mildenhall, which was priceless in itself), Tiger Beech for once crashing on the exit of the 4th bend, leaving his bike still going in the wire fence and landing on the dog track in front of the main stand and Dingle Brown for his all round contribution to speedway (and of course his name, which to me as an 8 year old child was just hilarious, sorry)

My riders i enjoyed watching Bobby Garrard Steve Bryenton Marvyn Cox Steve Naylor Kelvin Mullarkey Cliff Ott And does anyone remember Kerry Gray? He was an aussie who came over for a bit in the 80's. I used to go with my aunt and uncle and a few of their friends and one girl who used to go started dating him. He actuslly came to my uncles house on Christmas day!
