A rider badly treated by many in the sport - just needed the right sort of advice and handling to be really great.
norbold
I'd go for 1. Vic Ridgeon 2. Mike Broadbank 3. Kelvin Mullarkey 4. Tommy Sweetman 5. Clive Hitch 6. Gerry King 7. Dave Slater Well probably not really, but if you want to find out more about the above, "70 Years of Rye House Speedway" will be published on 28 April. First copies will be available at the track that night.

norbold
Amazed no Bobby Garrad, Kevin Smith, Ted Hubbard or even Ashley Pullen. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, you're right, but I was just trying to drum up a bit of interest for my book by mentioning a few names from the distant past who people might not have heard of but would want to find out more about! TwoMinuteWarning
Good to see Justin Elkins listed. A rider badly treated by many in the sport - just needed the right sort of advice and handling to be really great. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just needed a half-decent mechanic I reckon! Kelvin Mullarkey rules, OK?
speedyguy
Well Norbold - I'll add Bill Simpson, Jimmy Heard, Ronnie Rolfe and Charlie Cheshire, all members of Southern Area Championship winning teams at the Rye House track. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Remember all these with great affection: Bill Simpson once at Wembley, Jimmy Heard who had a good career at Stoke, and Ronnie Rolfe - was it Sheffield he had his best senior spell. And Charlie Cheshire, a real enthusiast who raced part of the 1953 season in Sain with the Ted Gibson's troupe. Happy times. Circa 1953 to 1957 in regard to their Rye House careers. spin king
Just a thought did not Ivan Mauager ride for Rye House when he first came over to this country.
Parsloes 1928 nearly
In these days of squads I've had to go with an all-time 1-12 rather than just 7.. 1) Paul Woods 2) Trevor Barnwell 3) Steve Naylor 4) Barry Thomas 5) Alan Mogridge 6) Pete Wigley 7) George Barclay With, completing the squad: Paul Bosley, Kevin Teager, Bob Young, Dingle Brown & 'Red' Ott.... What's that..?? They all rode for Crayford too..?? Oh, yes..!!!
norbold
Just a thought did not Ivan Mauger ride for Rye House when he first came over to this country. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes. In 1957 he scored five points in three matches and was then dropped.
spin king
Yes. In 1957 he scored five points in three matches and was then dropped. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I thought so, I believe that this was on his first visit to this country, and then he returned home after that. Wonder if that was the only time he was ever dropped from a side.

Just goes to show that no-one needs to be an overnight success to make it to the very top in the end....
