Speedway In Africa

Recommended Posts

Just been watching a World Football programme that shows highlights and goals from around the world and the African section was quite interesting.

Everyone of the venues was set in stadiums with oval tracks around them. Only one was a running track and a few looked more like race tracks. One where Gambia played and won a penalty shoot out was a ready made circuit.

So I looked into Stadiums in Africa and came accross these few Stadiums that could easily hold a Speedway GP

What do you think ?

Stade Brikama - Gambia

Stade Felix - Ivory Coast

Stade Anjalay - Mauritius

Kumasi Sports Stadium - Ghana

Accra Stadium - Ghana

Len Clay Stadium - Ghana (race track)

Stade de la Revolution - Congo

Liberty Stadium - Nigeria

Enyimba Stadium - Nigeria

Nnamdi Azikiwe - Nigeria

Liberation Stadium - Nigeria

Nyayo Stadium - Kenya (race track?)

Casablanca - Morrocco

Could Speedway hold a GP round in Gambia, Kenya etc.

are you watching Mr BSI ?

What other countries or Stadiums could be adapted easily for Speedway ?

How about Cape Town? Wonderful location, would attract a lot of local interest and I'd definitely go - one of the greatest cities I've ever visited.

Not really any thriving market or money to be made out there. It wouldn't attract sponsors, there is no history of motorsport in the Centre and South of Africa.

I also watched the programme TNT spoke about, unbelieveable some of the venues. One stadium looked to be firmly in the Jungle.

Interesting topic.

I couldn't see a speedway GP in any of those stadiums due to politics and polava and the only place it would be IMO would be in Johannesberg or Capetown as they do actually ride a South African championship.

Other countries that should stage it in the future could be Russia, U.S and possibly somewhere closer to home like France or Germany.

An idea to ideal countries to do speedway would be to take a leaf out of Moto GP'S book.

even better in the jungle have it as the last round, then if the top 4 are close on points WE CAN HAVE A RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE

Talking of AE, wasn't there speedway in Dubai a while back? That's a great growth area to gain financial support. :approve:

Read a few of the posts on this moved subject (?) and thought I would look in other areas.

Mabopane, South Africa

Odi Stadium, SA

This one is where the Kaiser Chiefs play their home games

Johannesburg Stadium

This one is the Olympic Stadium in 1958 in Tokyo

National Stadium, JAPAN

How about Bejing in China ?

Workers Stadium, CHINA

How about a Singapore Sling ?

Recently, i was looking for links to South African speedway. As i was aware of in the past there being a considerably successful level of meetings taking place every year. I was very surprised not to be able to find any current activity. Unless, someone knows better.

A bit closer to home, now that rugby has been played at Croke park maybe an Irish GP a possible ?

Hampden, Glasgow previously staged speedway but that before the rebuild, could be a goer.

Dont know if there would be space for a temp track at Murrayfield but as its been done at Cardiff & PARKEN why not ?

There are reports of South African meetings in Speedway Star from Christian Weber every few weeks.

The latest meeting at the end of January featured Byron Bekker and ex-Don favourite Deon Prinsloo - neither of whom won the meeting.

South African speedway and its stadiums are very low-key affairs. Nothing like the days in the 1950s when Buddy Fuller and Trevor Redmond promoted the sport - and even etsablished a league and international structure.

It all went wrong - too much bickering. Keep a watchful eye here in Britain...
