chopper
Have seen Chalie down at adelaide sidewinders speedway on a few occasions, he is following the progress of his friend Bill Mitchells kid. Still looks well for his age. Cheers Darrell
moxey63
I think this could be done-at least from 1946 to 1990. From 46 thru 64, Peter Morrish's book "British Speedway Leagues 1946-64,has all riders for all teams year by year-just points scored by each rider, not # of appearances. This book was published by Midland Speedway Agency 1984. From 1965 to 1990 there is "The Complete History of the British League" by Peter Oakes published 1991. Hope this helps, I am just about finished on my 1991-2006 book. It contains all team averages, tables, cup records, Internationals etc that happened in that period. In fact, it has almost everything that Peter Oakes' 1965-90 book contains and is sort of an update. All speedway fans should get a copy. I am really pleased with it. BOBBATH
A couple of things.Chopper-if you see Charlie at Adelaide-perhaps you could tell him about this forum discussion item and just tell him that he is still remembered with great affection by many for all the pleasure he gave us. Re the book -sounds great-one question re averages-would they be for League only, league and cups only or all meetings-not being picky would just be interested. Sounds great though and I will get a copy.
moxey63
The 1991-2006 book contains averages for: Div 1 - League, Play-offs, KOC, Craven Shield. Div 2 - League, Play-offs, KOC, Young Shield, Premier Trophy. Div 3 - League, Play-offs, KOC, Conference Trophy, Conference Shield. All match results are included for these comps as well as tables. Included are the major stories throughout the years, all major meeting results and scorers - Play-off finals, KOC Finals, 4TT Finals, Pairs Finals, League Riders' results, - ever-presents, Indoor meetings, touring teams. I have attempted to follow all what Peter Oakes included in his. Edited March 18, 2007 by moxey63
DW
I have attempted to follow all what Peter Oakes included in his. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Presumably without all the mistakes!!!
moxey63
Presumably without all the mistakes!!! I've heard a lot of people say Oakes' book contains mistakes, but I haven't come across that many. Could you give any pointers? I know the rides given for the 1965 season averages are incorrect, each rider x4 his matches ridden. A book of that magnitude must contain some. Paulco
Interesting column in last week's Glasgow v Rye House programme about Charlie . Apparently some sick joker sent informed the Govan Press newspaper , in the winter of 1966 , that Charlie had been killed in an accident in Australia . Back in those days i suppose it must have caused a lot of stress and worry as there was no internet or owt then . Embarrassingly the newspaper had to print an apology
The Third Man
QUOTE (spin king @ Feb 25 2007, 03:17 PM) 71 I would be 7 at the time, so my recollection is not very clear about Charles, I always thought that it was earlier than that, around 69 when he went to Sheffield. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You might be right SK - i was only a wean myself . I just remember it happening and being most upset about it . 1968 my first year in speedway is when he rode for us Frank Varey finally had his number 1, think we finished 3rd or fourth our best league position he then went back to the inferior tigers and was replaced by Jim Airey, Sheffields best ever rider PS Only got back off holiday today, now see someone has put the correct year Edited June 29, 2014 by The Third Man

FAST GATER
I saw him race for the Dukes in the mid 70's he looke older than mid 30's but was great round the Shay and had an arm chair style. Was he one of the last to use a Jap as I remember? He was one of the last to race a Jap I remember( memory could be playing tricks) him winning an open meeting at the SHAY in 74 i think and the prize was a new Weslake engine , there were some big names but the track was wet and he just flew that night .Remember thinking he looked about a 100yrs old ( I was 14yrs old) and did not even smile at the presentation but he looked almost asleep on a bike even round the Shay . ARU777
Taciturn was the word I would use to describe Charlie, an astonishing racer in that if he gated well, he won. Saw him smile a lot when it the company of good looking women, but he wasn't keen on autograph hunters and people who wanted a piece of him, or too much of his time. I always felt that if you wanted to learn how to be good at speedway, you had to study Charlie's style, habits, preparation, attention to detail etc etc. Safe to say I was a big fan, and one of those autograph hunters he would often avoid.
