Mr Snackette
Was in sunny Germany yesterday with Jimbo, sorting plans for the German GP. As most will be aware from the brochure, we were never going to stay in Gelsenkirchen, and if you have been there, you would know why!!! Indeed there is probably only one decent hotel in the area, which is right next door to the stadium complex. BSI has booked a number of rooms there, and whilst this is great if you're working at the Stadium, it's certainly not suitable for people looking for a weekend break. Our original plan was to stay in Cologne, but the switching of the date now coincides with the Cologne Fair, and there is no available accommodation in the city. However I am delighted to announce that the TP group will now be staying in Dusseldorf. Neither James nor I had visited Dusseldorf before, and yesterday provided the ideal opportunity to have a good look at this delightful German city. The accommodation we have booked is superb, and is less than a 45 minute drive to the Vetlins Arena. As part of the tour TP will be offering a fully guided sightseeing tour, which will include a river cruise on the Rhine. For those that have already booked based on the original date, James will be writing to you all individually, setting out the new arrangements, and providing you with the opportunity to confirm your booking. There will also be details published in the Speedway Star. I was really impressed with what Dusseldorf has to offer, and I am eagerly looking forward to spending some more time there in October. Are you coming to Oz in January or is the lovely Clare getting a Guernsey instead? Kind regards, the Token Ozzie.

Kind regards, the Token Ozzie. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Greetings to the Legend. As you can see I took the locquacious Mr Snackette to Germany, sadly for you all he is on a strict diet and refused us both any substantial refreshment. Add to that his "eccentric "driving plus totally unacceptable so called Music, it was a journey home to savour. Gelsenkirchen stadium is superb, the city and locality is a..***t h**e. We have contarcted a superb hotel in dusseldorf, about 1hr away, or 40 minutes if i drive. The Aussie Tour is 100% FULL...we hit Sydney 30th December and follow much of the 2008 aussie Championships, plus the Reef etc. Brian ..if he ditches the row he calls Music..will be on the tour, as will Big David who is a fair size as well and is a top Tour Manager. Clare sadly will not be on the tour due to (real) work committments, Jimbo will be around, but not sure where and when. Trust all in Aussie are awaiting teh arrival of Brian, ...and his "music"..Sad Bugga.
Mr Snackette
Sounds like a good party Jimbo! Are you coming to Oz in January or is the lovely Clare getting a Guernsey instead? Kind regards, the Token Ozzie. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If all goes to plan, I will with the Group all the way through the Aussie Tour, with Uncle Jimbo joining us (probably accompanied by the Memsaab.... mostly to keep him in check!!!) at some point during the tour. So look forward to seeing you in Oz Dave. Assuming that UK Immigration authorities are not having a major clampdown on all these migrant Aussies invading our hallowed shores, will we have the pleasure of your company in Europe during the summer?!!! BigFatDave
Looking forward to your arrival, mate, I have warned half the population so you should be safe from Loose Women, if nothing else. The nasty rash I contracted during the Ozchamps has cleared up thanks to the application of an old Aboriginal Recipe of Raw Goanna Gall Bladder and Pickled Koala testicles, so hopefully I'll be out of quarantine and back on the Mainland when you get here. Regards, Dave. PS My Future Travel plans are heavily dependant on whether I win the lottery or not, but you never know.....be afraid, be very, very afraid.....! f-s-p
Gelsenkirchen stadium is superb, the city and locality is a..***t h**e. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So how did you rate Daugavpils then...
spiegal
So how did you rate Daugavpils then... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Let's say we have changed this year's tour to be based in RIGA which is truly superb. we are thus just visiting Daugavpils for the Saturday night, and then back next day to the delights, the beer, the good food, and teh stunning ladies of Riga. The track at Daugavpils is superb, and teh journey from Riga to this outpost of cultural awareness is something everyone should try. Does that answer the question ? f-s-p
How very politically correctly put. Hope I spelled that right. I've been thinking about going to this one, since I could fly to Bremen with Ryanair practically from my backyard (10 km to the airport). DB would take me to Gelsenkirchen but if there's nothing else to do why bother... I wondered if you are just too picky...

If I was ever offered a free weekend to gelsenkirchen, plus spending money and e500 in free beer vouchers, I think that i would rather fill in my tax returns form. How much more blunt do you need? Dusseldorf in my opinion is superb and the nearest city which has the quality I look for when basing any tour.
f-s-p
Point taken. I guess this GP is more about TV then. Big stadium with bright lights. Not about the speedway traveller who likes to see (some) sights as well. Opposite to the Polish GP's which I think have both. Enjoy Dusseldorf! I'll scout Bremen for you during my easter holiday. Sandie
We planned on using Essen as our hotel location. Maybe we should rethink if Dusseldorf is to be the speedway hang-out. Spiegal - we are driving across, what was the area around the stadium like for parking - did you notice?

Will probably stay for an overnight on our way to Wroclaw.
spiegal
A word of warning about DUSSELDORF. Friday/saturday nights are ok. But Sunday is already booked out. the KOLN Fair is massive with about 160,000 delegates and all the cities within 50kms are booked out. we were very lucky, but I know of a 2 star hotel midway between Koln and Bonn is charging e180 per room per night for the fair. as for parking ...loads...Essen..it is in the same area of the Rhur....extremely industrial and scenic...not unless you like Coal mines and steel works. sjw ministerofport
We are stopping in the Holiday Inn at Essen, just wondered whether anyone else is. From what you have said on here it looks like we may have picked the wrong town, but if I can get a few pints and a bit of sunshine that will do. It also has a pool!! But there is still time for this to change!! Speigal - Im not worried about parking in Essen - I was wondering what the parking is like in Gelsenkirchen around the stadium. Sorry if I confuzzled you.
iris123
As long as the place has 5 or 6 pubs you are laughing.I stayed in Dortmund years back when Celtic played there and had a great time. There was a typical German town square with pubs around it(full of Celtic supporters )At first Dortmund didn't look that nice(it probably isn't the place for sight-seeing),but once you get into a couple of pubs and get chatting to the locals,we had a super time.In one we got into the pub about 1 or 2 in the afternoon and didn't come out till about 4 the next morning. The woman running the place even cooked us a dinner
Mr Snackette
......................... I was wondering what the parking is like in Gelsenkirchen around the stadium............... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The stadium isn't actually in Gelsenkirchen, it's on the outskirts. The suburb of Schalke is close by, but even that is a little distance away. The venue is close by a retail park, with the stadium having what appeared to be plenty of parking. How much of this (and at what cost), will become available on the night, remains to be seen.
Ali C
Is anyone staying in Dusseldorf? If so, what hotel? Never been to the place so don't know the best place to stay. Don't want to pay a fortune though!
