Tony Featherstone

We're hopefully going to interview Tony Featherstone - one of the sport's characters of the 70s - in the next Backtrack.

Does anyone have any interesting/offbeat/unusual stories or favourite memories about this ex-rider who appeared for Boston, Peterborough, Hackney, Crayford, etc?

Or any particular question(s) you would like us to put to Tony when we speak to him?

Cheers.

What was his time at Crayford like and is he in touch with any of their former riders

Looking back on it, Tony had a rather disappointing spell at London Rd. (ie Crayford) in 1978..: more or less ever present, his average was only just over five points in the league.

May be worth delving into that as my memory was that for other clubs around that mid to late '70s period he performed generally a lot better than this sort of return suggests..

Is he still superstituous about the colour Green? :D

How did his transfer to Hackney come about and did he regret his move up to the BL?

Fond memories of his Speedway career? Has he kept any of his bikes, leathers, mementos (some former riders get rid of it all).

What's he doing now?

Is he still interested in Speedway today and does he attend any meetings?

Tony F was a genuine nice bloke who always had time for a chat with the supporters; I look forward to the interview.

You could ask Tony if he thinks it was a wise thing to do to ask Jimmy Beaton Snr "What time do the potatoes come up," one night when we (Crayford) arrived at Blantyre! :-)

Tony's best spell as i remember was at Bradford where he had a very good relationship with the promoter there Jim Streets, what was that like ? He also had a very up and down relationship with Cyril Crane following Kings Lynn ll's move to Boston in the early 70's, but came back and did well later in his career, what was Cyril really like ?

Is it true that he went into his local branch of the TSB and asked them for a set of leathers like Ray Wilson had at Leicester !

Nice Guy who i met a few times, real enthusiast, his equipment was always immacculate.
