Brotherly Love?

This Saturday night (November 18) will go down as one to remember in the history of Australian Speedway. Tamworth’s Oakburn Park Raceway is playing host to six pairs of brothers who will battle it out for only one crown in the NSW Senior Speedway Solo Open Championship.

The band of brothers racing in the Championship is bestowed with surnames that are already sanctified in Speedway history. Holder (Chris and James), Herne (Jay and Lee), Slade (Michael and Luke), Myers (Elliott and Lewis), Armstrong (Dave and Tom), and Proctor (Tyron and Toby) are all talented riders who will make up the bulk of the field that is also to feature strong contenders Jason Doyle and Queenslander John Oliver.

The Tamworth Motorcycle Club Inc. sanctioned event will also feature the running of the NSW Under 16 Speedway Solo Championship with riders such as Alex Davies and 14-year-old Taylor Poole. It will be an emotional night for Poole who is returning to racing after a serious crash earlier in the year.

President of the Tamworth Motorcycle Club, Paul Slade predicts a blockbuster meeting, the kind where heroes can fade or be made.

“With a strong line up of young rising stars in both the NSW open and under 16 Championships this meeting promises to be one not to miss,” he claims.

“Picking a winner in both Championship races is anyone’s guess, and I am not game enough to single anyone out, as its just going to be closely fought.”

The NSW Championship Open class will contest four heat races each, with the top 12 to fight it out in two semi-finals before the top three is given the green light to line up for a four lap final. In the Juniors, each rider will contend four heats, with the top eight riders are to contest two semi-finals, before the top four on points will go through to the four lap final.

Support classes will include Senior Speedway Sidecars, under 16 Speedway Sidecars and Evolution (Veterans).

Racing is set to being at 4.30pm, and is expected to cease at approximately 10.00pm.

I don't know the record for number of brothers in any event is but this'd have to go close.

Most number of brothers in a meeting.

Not Australia but South Africa. Somewhere I read of a meeting with five brothers involved - Doug, Jack, Harry, Allan and Bob Serrurier. Beat that! Must have been at the Old Barn, outside Johannesburg, in early 1946.

I'm sure at some points the Collins brothers all rode in a meeting together.  One of them must have  had a testimonial or someone saw a bit of publicity for getting them all together.

I remember something like this was it a testimonial meeting or something for either Les or Peter?

Thanks for that BFD. Any news on how John Oliver did?

Not sure if John rode in this meeting but he will be riding at Pioneer Park on Saturday 25th November, looking forward to seeing him ride on the pacey PP track.

More Brothers.... From AMCN re the Long Track Championships yesterday:

# There are 15 sets of brothers among the competitors – some of whom will compete against each other in the same class. In the long track slider class there are 3 sets of brothers.
