Brian L
albeit the saddest. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Agree, very sad feel to this issue, the Billy Sanders article is tragic.
shazzybird
Have you got to be an Hackney supporter to get Backtrack first? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No but it does help I think Congratulations on this edition
moxey63
Does it help if I say I went to Hackney once, it was '76 when the Aces got a last race Wilkie-Mort 5-1 to win the match, Plech a maximum for the Hawks. It may go against me however, saying Hawks lost. Tony, where is MY BACKTRACK?

TonyMac
Not too happy that issue 17 is on sale on ebay before some subscribers even receive it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Calm down!, Calm down! Seriously, if you haven't yet received your copy, please PM me (or, better still, phone us on 01708 734 502) so that we can look into it for you immediately. If you do that now, with details of your full address, we will endeavour to pinpoint the problem and resolve it. Chances are, it has simply got lost in the deluge of Chrimbo post (from the messages on here, it's obvious that copies are arriving at different times depending on where you live, even though they are ALL posted out at the same time), or it has still to arrive! But pse call us anyway so that we can try and put things right for you. As a matter of policy, and in fairness to our loyal (and very patient!) subscribers, we do not make any copies available on eBay until AFTER we are reasonably certain that ALL subscribers have received theirs first. This time, it appears the Xmas post factor has kicked in. Many thanks for the positive comments about issue 17 from those who have seen it - that's Hackney former fans everywhere, plus those who look back fondly on the Hawks! moxey63
I liked Hackney - the racing was brilliant there. Just got a feeling my postman's an ex-Hackney fan and must have been reading my comments on here.

It may go against me however, saying Hawks lost. I got mine all right and I've never been to Hackney Speedway at all - although I did go to the Hackney Empire in the summer In all seriousness, it did bring a bit of a lump to my throat as Billy Sanders was one of my favourite riders, will always remember coming home from holiday and finding out what had happened to him It was nice to see a mention for Ray Glover as well, like Sandman says, a bit of a sad issue really all told. Although on a more positive note, nice to see an article on Ian "Super Mouse" Cartwright, he was another old favourite of mine. For those who never saw him ride, as regards style, Simon was his double!!

BigFatDave
Fans of Billy Sanders might like to know his legend lives on - From WORLDSPEEDWAY: The BILLY THE KID Cup. The five round 2007 Linddales Labour Hire Australian Motorcycle Speedway Championship Series will see the best placed rider under the age of 23 awarded the inaugural Billy Sanders Trophy. Sanders was a legend in Australian Speedway Motorcycling – taking no less than six Australian Speedway Championships and twice stood on the podium in the World Speedway Championships. He passed away in tragic circumstances in England in 1985. Sanders enjoyed rockstar-like status in Sydney during the 1970’s when he was at his absolute peak. The venue that shot Billy to prominence – the Sydney Showground – makes a return to Australian Championship Speedway at it’s new home in Sydney Olympic Park after an absence of 27 years. Billy was the last to win an Australian Championship at the old Sydney Showground in 1980. "For many years we have been thinking about an appropriate way to honour Billy," Sanders’ nephew, Craig Wallace said. "When it was suggested the Billy Sanders Trophy be struck for the 2007 Championships, we had no hesitation in giving it our full support. "We feel it very fitting to be involved with this prize for the best rider under the age of 23 in the Linddales Labour Hire Australian Championships, particularly as Championship Speedway will be returning to the Sydney Showground, where Billy was a legend." Accompanying the perpetual trophy will be a fantastic prize courtesy of MJM Speedway Spares – a pair of new Daytona Race Boots. "Billy’s legacy continues to live on in the sport in Australia despite it being over 20 years since he passed on," said MJM Speedway Spares proprietor, Matt Jones. "I think it’s fair to say that Billy’s efforts on the international stage inspired many young Australian Speedway riders to pursue a career overseas. "Not only that, his performances on home soil were – for many years – without peer. We are honoured to be involved with this prize, which is sure to become one of the most sought after in Australian Speedway racing." "The Sanders and Wallace families would like to thank MJM Speedway Spares for their association with the Trophy and also Championship Co-Ordinators Power Productions, without who’s persistence, this would not be possible," Craig Wallace concluded. The seeded riders eligible for the Billy Sanders Trophy are as follows*: -Troy Batchelor (Qld) -Jason Doyle (NSW) -Chris Holder (NSW) -Rory Schlein (SA) -Cameron Woodward (Vic) *These five riders may be joined by some or all of the four qualifiers from the Qualifying Meeting on December 30, 2006 at Gillman Speedway, Adelaide. I can see Corey being in the mix. Great Tribute to Billy and to whoever is good enough to win it. Go Rooboy!
