Ryan Sullivan- Brave or Stupid?

Recommended Posts

"Ryan Sullivan knows he will be close to crossing the fine line between bravery and stupidity when he takes his place in the Slovenian Grand Prix tonight" Peterborough Evening Telegraph 12-07-03

What does everyone else think? Personally, I can't decide. I know he wants a top 10 finish but Oh My God! A broken bone in his back, burnt arm and a damaged collarbone!

Me thinks 85% Stupid 15% Brave! (The odds have shortened :) )

I've damaged a coupe of ligaments in my back and they hurt like hell from time to time. I couldn't walk for two days when I did it. God know what Ryan is feeling right now and how he will feel after he's ridden. I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled out after his first race. I hope he pulls out after his first race, though before that would be better.

I think 100% stupid...I read yesterday on the GP site that his specialists have told him his back should be pinned and he needs a skin graft on his arm - he apparently is struggling to stand up straight! Does the fact that Cegielski is still in hospital trying to walk again after injuring his back on track not register with Sully?

If he comes off again tonight what untold damage to his back will he do? He might feel safe in his abilities but how can he guarantee another rider isn't going to hit him? And what about the other 23 competitors - would you feel happy going into a race with a bloke who has a back injury?

There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity and if the report on the GP site is accurate then this ranks up there as one of the most reckless and selfish decisions I've encountered in this sport and he's obviously lost the ability for rational thought. Your back is such a delicate piece of your body to take this risk is idiotic. I only hope the FIM step in and stop him competing on medical grounds. :?

STUPID ! ! !

In my opinion, for what it's worth, Ryans decsion to ride with such injuries borders on the insane. Fair enuff the guy wants that Championship, but regardless of a top 10 finish or not, Ryan would undoubtably be given a wild card for next season, if required.

Very Brave, only for the fact that he is risking everything for the sake of a Grand Prix ........ not very sensible especially if he has been advised against it. I wish him all the luck for tonight and hope he finishes 2nd to Mark Loram at the end ;)

He looked very uncomfortable after his second ride, holding his back.

I totally agree that Sully is CRAZY for riding tonight!!

Not only is he putting himself in further danger of causing extensive damage to his injuries but he could be putting other riders at risk!!

Fair enough he wants to win but he aint going to do that being so injured!

After seeing Lukas Dryml's crash earlier........That could have easily been Sully!! :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

I do not agree with you, neither Sullivan or Loram at any time put their rivals in jeopardy, the GP series means a great deal to riders, if they are not in with a chance of winning it, they still have the incentive to ride to get in next years GP's. To my mind these riders are heroes!

You can say that after the event BritPeter - but what if it had been Sullivan instead of Lukas in that horrific crash? I stand by my earlier view - with all those incidents tonight Sullivan was lucky not to have been involved in any of them...as someone said it's a fine line.....

We are talking about a very determined and focussed Speedway rider.

Good luck to you Ryan - Aussie followers are right beind you.

Speedway riders make all other sportsmen look like wimps.

There are many other instances of riders competing with serious injuries.

Put yourself in his boots. He came so close last year - every point earned means he is closer to the top of the pack in the next round.

A guy like Ryan Sullivan deserves our respect. I think what he does is very brave and proves Aussies are hard men.

I don't know whom of you follows Le Tour de France, but on Sunday morning Team CSC rider Tyler Hamilton will start his seventh day of the Tour with a double collarbone fracture. Yesterday, there was 145 mile stage with 4 alpine mountains to be climbed and Hamilton was only 3 minutes behind winner Richard Virenque.

All I want to say is, everybody has a different painbarrier and ways to deal with pain. But it's an essential part of being a great sportsman.

Guys like that are common as muck in motorcycle roadracing, I used to as an inspiration when I had heart surgery two years ago and suffered from a broken (cut really) sternum. At such moments you don't look up to pamsy little football players like Davy Beckham.

Totally agree with you Rabbit, I think he is a fool to continue riding.

The GP's seem to have made a lot of the riders into desperate men,yes they are brave to a certain extent but no one ever won a GP from a hospital bed .Is it worth the risk lads :?:

Im one of Sully's biggest fans(as you an tell by the name) but i was totally stressed out every time he was on track last night!!

Hes brave to get on a speedway bike in the first place! :)

Hes stupid to get on a speedway bike with a broken collarbone and a cracked vertabrae!!!! :x

If that had have been Ryan in any of those crashes who knows what could have happened! :-(:cry:

Its ok saying now that it doesnt matter because nothing happened but it could very easily have done!! :x :x

Even if he had been in the race with a crash..........how would he have coped having to lay the bike down maybe jarring his back???

Fair enough he wanted to ride but it was a silly risk that he shouldnt have taken!!!!

I hope he counts himself lucky that he came out of last nights meeting without adding to his list of broken bones!

I agree it was totally irresponsible for Ryan to ride last night. He was so lucky to get away without further injury which means in the same position he'll do exactly the same again..and again. :x Will he (or his opponents) be so lucky nexy time.

To be totally honest I'm not overly worried about Sullivan or any other rider worsening their own injuries, they have only theirselves to blame or come to terms with but as some people have said would Sullivan have been fit enough to lay his bike down if necessary to avoid injuring another?

So my verdict is STUPID simply for putting other riders at risk.

Brave, yet selfish.... perhaps the best thing for Sullivan to do is pull out of the rest of the GP series... get his injuries sorted, and give himself a decent rest, then come back even better.

Brave,Yes. Stupid, very.

Totally agree with other comments re putting other riders at unnecessary risk. Would have thought someone would have the nous to bar riders who are a danger to others.
