It was very early seventies, Cradley v Coventry at Dudley Wood.

I was very young and pestered my old man to take me all the time after that. All I remember was the huge crowd and the big rivalry between the two number ones, Bernie Persson and Nigel Boocock, oh and I was always amazed by the legendary Scotsmans Bank, where hundreds of fans watched for free..

The rest is history, I'm still hooked.

I can't remember my first meeting like Honey I was Very young at the time, there are lots of meetings that are very memorable for me though and the one that really sticks in my mind was Uncle riding @ Wimbledon and making the rostrum, Mrs Moon (Canterbury fans will know who I mean) was there and she made our day complete by wearing a crown with "King Ted" on it.

Its probably because you cant lose children there, as children me and my brother use to disappear all the time, especially to go and peep into the pits (we thought we were being naughty! ) through a crack in the door, mum and dad never worried about us because we couldnt get out!

All the people that i stand with all went as children which is probably why we are so addicted and passionate towards the club.

I have absolutely no memory of the first match I went to cos I was about 6 weeks old at the time.

I do know it was at Owlerton, and Dad reckons it was the first match of the 1981 season and was against Wimbledon!

Can anyone tell me if this is right, and what the scores were?

It would have been, roughly, the end of March 1981.

18th May 1968, Canterburys first meeting, I was 9 when my late Dad took me along to see this sensational new sport in the area. totally hooked ever since and all I can remember of the day is the huge crowd more than I had ever seen and the dust. :D

Oh no,not the early 1980's aka the Glover regime of tightfistedness, dodgy Aussie 'wonderkids' and Shawn Moran lol

Well the first meeting of the '81 season was on March 26th against Halifax, which the Tigers won 50-46 ,top tiger was Dave Morton with 17, fastest time of the night was 67.6!

Wimbledon came on May 21st and got stuffed 58-20,Shawn with a four ride max and Reggie paid 8 from reserve, fastest time was 65.7!

If you want anymore details,I'll put them up for you Shalewhale.

My own first meeting was the Yorkshire Bank Trophy in early summer 1977,not that I cared,I wanted to go home after 3 heats, just like lastnight!

Aug / Sept 1978 Milton Keynes Knights vs Edinburgh Monarchs, 39-39.

I had been trying to get my dad to take me to Speedway all through this 1st season as i'd only seen it on T.V. up to then.

As i went through the turnstiles (60p if i remember correctly) the riders were on the parade lap and as they did not wear helmets during the parade, the first sight i saw was Bert Harkins waving to the crowd wearing his 'Tamoshanter ?' (is that the right spelling ?). I heard 'that noise' and got 'that smell' for the first time and that was it, i didn't miss a home match for 5 years.

As a strange quirk of fate, when Bert rode for the Knights in 1980, i got to help him in the pits at Groveway and also used to travel by train from M.K. to his shop in Berkhamsted to help him out now and again during the school holidays travelling back in his van to the track on a tuesday. What an experience for a speedway-mad 15 year old ?.

Now some 23 years later I manage an Electrical supertore so thanks Bert for the start in retail.

I was talking about this thread to an acquaintance of mine who does not possess a computer. He told me his first meeting was on 19 February 1928 at a place called High Beech. He said unfortunately he didn't remember much about the meeting as he was only 4 months old at the time.

Beat that one!

So I'm guessing you must have been there in 1981?

Hi Panthersfan

Yes I was there in 1981!!!!, From 1979 till the end on that fatefull night in 1992 at Elfield Park, a coming together of factions,on another night might not ever have happened.
