Robbie B
What was the first speedway meeting that you can remember going to :?: I know others members of the forum have going to speedway, way before me, but below is the details of the first meeting that I went, and got hooked on speedway too. Wimbledon may have lost this meeting :-( , but I have supported them ever since. I also used to go reguarly to White City, Hackney and also to Crayford now and again. Wimbledon, years ago in the second half, used to put junior riders in the second half heats, to give them experience. Later there was three qualifing heats, with the fastest second place rider, also qualifing for the second half final. Luckily enough, I kept all my old programmes. It's great to look back on my old programmes, now and again.

britneyspears
May 1975 at Cradley Heath at the grand old age of 6 months, cant bear to look at the place now, just a field with a circular dip in the middle where our beloved track used to be no idea who the opposition were :? Can remember playing on the terraces at CH and insisting on being picked up when Bruce Penhall rode, had good taste from an early age Can remember Wembley 81 quite clearly and the La colliseium the following year as my first clear memories of the actual racing. Bryce
Can't remember the exact details, as I was quite young. It would have been at Cleveland Park, to see the Teesside Tigers. Nig Close was in the team, I remember, as his Dad and mine were friends. He took my brother and I into the stadium with him, which was a big thrill at the time. Alan Emerson, Tom Leadbitter, Pete Smith, and Andy Cowans were also riding. I think the opposition was Canterbury, with Les Rumsey and Ted Hubbard in the team. panthersfan
My first meeting was when I was seven, so about a decade ago! I think it was Peterborough vs someone, but I can't be sure.... I didn't like it, I kept getting shale in my eyes and up my nose... I didn't go for another 8 years after that!
Robbo
I know it was in 1997 when the Wasps reformed and I think it was against the Berwick Bandits, because the first meeting against Exeter was rained off, been hooked ever since and I was only 9! Custom House Kid
I can't remember my first meeting but i started going to West Ham in the 1965 season, when I was 9, but only for a few meetings I went to most of the home meetings in 1966 ! I can rember standing on the back straight and tucking into enormous great hot dogs between races. My most vivid memory of that time, was the night Dave Wills Died from what was a silly accident :x and think I can still remember him waving as he was put in the ambulance. What a tragedy :-( I used to watch from the back straight until the stand was knocked down and I still watch from there at Arena ! I wish there was a Stadium like Custom House now :!: I Saw it towards the end of it's life, but I would have loved to have seen it at its peak with 70000 + and no parking problems

Many thanks for sharing the meeting results, was good to see some names from "Years Gone By" even if you have just aged me more than I had hoped

The result was :- Ellesmere Port - 18 Belle Vue - 17 Cradley Heath - 30 Wolverhampton -
Grachan
I was on a 'holiday' with my family, staying at some friends of theirs in Dorchester. These are the scores from my first ever programme. I haven't checked to see if they are correct. Tuesday July 30 1974. Weymouth Wizards 41 Crewe Kings 37 Weymouth Team Manager: Trevor Young 1. Russell Foot: 1,2,0,0,3 = 6 2. Clark Facey R/R 3. Kelvin Mullarkey: 2,3,2,3,1 = 11 4. Geoff Swindells: 1,2,2,0 = 5 5. Nigel Couzens: 2,3,3,1,2 = 11 6. Brian Paddington: 0,1,1 = 2 7. Steve Lomas: 1,1,3,1 = 6 8. Mark Sawyers: DNR Crewe Team Manager: Dave Parry 1. Dave Morton: 3,0,2,2,3 = 10 2. Ian Cartwright: 0,1,2,0 = 3 3. John Jackson: 0,3,1,1 = 5 4. Cliff Anderson: 0,0,0 = 0 5. Keith White: 3,3,3,2 = 11 6. ?? Wells: 2,0,0 = 2 7. Wayne Forrest: 3,2,1 = 6 Great to see Weymouth on their way back, by the way, even if it is with the wrong nickname. I see the old track was 380 yards. The new one will only be about 250 or something according to Speedway Star, so will be quite a different Weymouth. Why are tracks nearly always so short these days? BTL
My first meeting was Glasgow Tigers v Swindon Robins at White City in 1966, with Robins beating Tigers that night. Charlie Monk, Alf Wells, Maury Mattingly, Willie Templeton, rode for the Tigers with Barry Briggs, Eric Broadbanks, Bob Kilby, and Martin Ashby for Robins (who became champs that year?) Also seem to remember Silver Helmet match race when Briggs beat Monk (and possibly broke track record as well). BTW I hope this is not a bad omen since we are at home tomorrow (13/7/03) against top of the table Swindon - deja vue or what? I hope not. panthersfan
I didn't like it, I kept getting shale in my eyes and up my nose What the Hell were you doing, searching for truffles? :? err... not that I know of, I can't really remember much of the meeting. LOL. maybe I was looking for truffles? Though slightly more likely was that I was sitting at what I think was the second bend... and of course the bikes didn't have deflector thingys so I got showered with shale. The one thing I did like, however, from my first meeting was the smell.
Leg Trailer
My first one was Peterborough vs someone in 1989 at the showground when the track was narrow and risky! I think I may have been taken to a mtach before then when I was a toddler but not too sure. LT.
stevehone
Why are tracks nearly always so short these days? chatting to a mate at Rye House last night I happened to mention this... the reply worried me somewhat in that the regulation states that any new tracks being built must be within a certain length, therefore all tracks must be stupid small trick tracks. can anyone confirm this? no more quality tracks to be opened like canterbury, old poole, exeter, swindon etc :-(
