2ndBender
Very disappointed to see the German GP is not being held on a proper speedway track. I couldn't agree more. My views on one-off tracks are well known. I only go to Cardiff because it's so close, and I go for the sense of occasion, not for the the so-called racing. And despite Benfields' and Olsens' assurances that it's getting better, well, they're kidding themselves and us. Look at Bydgoszcz this year. Now that's what I call a Speedway track! The high water mark for Cardiff was probably 2004, when the racing was quite good, but the last couple of years have been fairly anonymous, while the Parken track this season was dreadful. I suspect that eventually people will tire of shelling out a small fortune for little more than a social event where the primary attraction has become little more than a collection of speedway supporters meeting up for a once-a-season-shindig and the crowds will drift away. Mr Snackette
If we accept the idea that the majority of fans want the GP series to expand and to have more events, then it is to be expected that at least one(possibly more) will need to take place in October. If we then accept, that for the time being at least, the series will be contested solely in Europe, which "proper speedway track" could 100% guarantee that the event and the Championship will be concluded on the due day? I would suggest none. Only stadiums such as Cadiff, Parken and now Gelsenkirchen are not at the mercy of the autumnal climate. I'm sure that had this Forum existed back in time there be those folks bemoaning the loss of cinders for this new fangled shale stuff!!! "One off tracks" are part of speedway's development and over time will continue to improve. Mind you nostalgia ain't what it used to be!!! TwoMinuteWarning
Like many fans, I'm all in favour of indoor speedway - provided the track is good. But Cardiff was nothing short of a disgrace this year, and if that track had been served up at an outdoor speedway for a league match, I think there would have been doubts about whether the riders would have agreed to ride. At the top level, speedway should be a test of skill and speed - NOT a lottery! Parken was a reasonable track this year, but the best 2 GP's by far were at Krsko and Bydgoszcz, where Olsen left the dirt on the tracks. I'm willing to go to the (provisional!) German GP next year, and hope it's a success, but the pricing will be crucial if they are to attract the all-important Polish fans across the border. Cardiff was superb in 04 and then somewhat has gone downhill. Parken has not been the best and I think this is because of the rectangle shape it has. From what I have seen of the stadium, it will be similar, very tight turns.

Pollyanna
looks a good calender of events. the german stadium looks very nice, i hope they get enough people through the turnstiles to make it pay. swc round at coventry <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ______________________________________________________________ I am a bit concerned that the number of GPs has now risen to 11. In 2005, the World Champion was known in the 8th out of 9, this year we knew the Champion in the 8th out of 10. I feel sorry for the Eastbourne fans who are likely to be without their No. 1 (Nicki P) in 11 of their 20 home League fixtures. I would not be very happy if it was my team. In view of all the comments from fans who hate having guests in their team, this is an unavoidable situation for Eastbourne who will have to track a guest, unless the new Promoter changes the race night. The GPs originally started with 6 rounds, now it is 11. Will it prove to be too many?
rabbit
Whilst I'd agree with you in principle Pollyanna, Eastbourne this season had a very nice agreement with Mark Loram who guested for them on virtually every GP weekend that Nicki was missing. I'm sure that they would rather have had NP but in the circumstances they probably considered Mark as a home team rider rather than a guest. Nevs
Have only just noticed this thread.Didn't notice the start date-assumed it was posted today. I feel I must hold my hands up to my own stupidity at reading the title two minutes ago and thinking so it's not just the Speedway Star Calendar this year then!!!-and was going to take a look and see what they were like, with a possible view to buying a couple as xmas pressies-oops  Edited October 27, 2006 by Nevs
