The crowd wanted Tomicek to win the trophy, which was a memorial for his grandfather, and he led the scorers with 14 points in the qualifying heats.

He had been beaten only by young Croatian Jurica Pavlic, who beat him again in the final, but Josef Franc outgated them both to win a Jawa engine. Pavlic proved at both Prague and Pardubice that he is an excellent gater, though it has to said that I don't recall him actually passing anyone at either venue.

But he's a gutsy kid, and would NOT throttle back when Rymel took him wider ... and wider ... and wider, in one race at Prague.

The meeting, unfortunately, featured freestyle motocross jumpers (with a 10 foot high landing ramp which remained on the centre green throughout the meeting), cheerleaders (who performed even while the races were going on), a rather good fireworks display, a cops-and-robbers type chase (yeah, I was baffled too), an under-15 race, gymnastics displays by the cheerleaders, a BMX display - oh, and 23 speedway races. But no amount of variety could disguise what was a lower quality field than is usual for this event.

By the way, the Italian Guglielmo Franchetti is completely mad, out of control rather too often, and extremely entertaining. But you wouldn't choose to be riding the same speedway track as him!
