Does anyone know what happened to the former West Ham, Wembley, Newport and Wimbledon rider Tony Clarke ? Last I heard back in 73-74, he was doing time at her majestys pleasure.

I've no idea what he's doing now, but Tony was a bit of a character.

 

Legend had it (well, Dave Lanning had it) that he honed his biking skills racing around the North Circular Road. I remember him rising rapidly through the second halves at West Ham and going on to tour Australia with the British Lions.

 

I may be wrong, but wasn't he allegedly connected with the theft of bikes belonging to a touring Russian team?

I think it was the Russians bike's and other equipment prior to the 72 world final. One of the Ruskies I remember wore a set of Anders Michanecks old leathers, as his own had gone missing.

Nothing alledged about it - that is what he was in prison for

 

And he rode for Wolves after coming out in 1975

There's a chapter in the 1972 Champions Book of Speedway in which Tony claims to be the luckiest rider in the sport because he hadn't missed a meeting for, I think, 3 seasons, may have been longer. I think he missed one or two after that though.
