Wembley Hopes

Recommended Posts

On a purely practical point. Is Wembley designed so that the pitch can be removed easily to accommodate other sports/events?. The Cardiff pitch is laid on pallets which can be easily shipped in and out making the Millennium stadium very flexible in the events it can stage.

I dont think the Wembley owners would be too keen on having tonnes of shale dumped on some temporary platform over their beloved turf.

Take a look at the post that started this thread off.I assume that they won't be holding the car event on grass B) And if they do i doubt the pitch will be fit for a match very soon after B)

I wonder when the fastest growing motor sport in the country will be holding events there,eh Parsloes

Not plugging the September 20 Motoring News, but its front cover gives a photo of what has happened at the Stade de France in Paris and will happen presumably at Wembley. If you hurry your WHS or newsagent may still have a copy. The photo is wonderful. The MN may have a website which shows it. I don't know.

It goes from there, I guesss!

You say that, but the simple answer is that it can be adapted for athletics but isn't built to accommodate motorsports. Any change of policy would be met by a tactical solution, I expect. This taken from the Wembley stadium website:

Athletics

Though designed primarily for football, rugby and music events, the new Wembley Stadium is also capable of hosting world-class athletic events.

A revolutionary solution has been developed to ensure that both football and athletics fans can enjoy perfect views, thanks to a temporary athletics platform that can be installed when necessary.

If Wembley is required to host a major athletics event, the prefabricated platform can be built over the lower bowl, covering some of the seats but creating the increased surface needed to fit an athletics track.  The platform will take just a few weeks to install and remove, making Wembley a versatile, multi-sport venue.

There has been significant progress on securing land for a potential athletics warm-up facility after discussions with the London Borough of Brent. Four possible sites have been identified, with Sherrins Farm likely to prove the most deliverable solution.

The platform solution is very similar to the current proposals for the New York Olympic bid.

If this is the event where Schumi and other drivers competed in some stadium,i think i saw a bit on Eurosport.

And Andy will the event be held on grass? No.So if they ae looking seriously at holding this event they must have a solution in mind.

That's what I mean - a tactical solution requiring cutting off the corners of the pitch. Will look at the stadium design and see what space is available.

Yes.In the end the whole thing might prove too costly. In the last few years we have had a few enquiries about holding speedway/Ice speedway here in Hamburg that went as far as riders out on the track.Sadly nothing ever came of it.Costs were the problem i heard. But i do think it would be a great boost to British speedway if a GP was held at Wembley

In a word, it's impossible without cutting up a significant portion of the pitch. The pitch goes right to the edge of the seating areas, obviously to keep fans as close to the action as possible. Sorry to say this, but I think the new Wembley is going to be out of the question for speedway, whatever is done for other sports. :(

Hmm, good point, iris!!!!

There is Short Track as part of that motor sports programme at the Stade de France I believe, so who knows..??!

And the quote is "fastest growing motor sport in EUROPE".

You did know that Hyperbole is my middle name..??!!! :D:rolleyes::D

Ron: There were three USA riders on the World Final rostrum in 1937; and I think that you'll find that there's been several examples of two riders from the same English club in a WC 1,2,3.

But good to see far more positive vibes this time about a return of Speedway to Wembley..: don't forget that post-2012 they'll be ANOTHER huge (and under-used) stadium in the capital too..: and it's going to be (virtually) on the site of the old 'Ackney Wick track..!!

Sweden saw Ove, Knutsson and Nordin as the top 3 when the final was first staged in Malmo, the first time outside Wembley. Michael Lee & Dave Jessup of Kings Lynn took the top two places at Ullevi in Sweden.

Maybe in the future we may well see Speedway back in London. What is happening about Walthamstow?

Walthamstow won't see speedway again, either. Ever been there? Surrounded by residential housing. :(

wont the same thing happen again

I guess that depends on who wins any potential court case between the FA and Multiplex. The FA had to borrow a vast amount of money (from German banks) to fund Wembley. And the cost over-runs are equally huge, leaving Multiplex with losses of up to £100 million, which they'll have to look to recoup via the courts.

Lets hope wembley comes back to host the gp again, it would cost a lot more with beer being 4 pound a pint and no one would be able to stay in a hotel before the event due to the cost .

Would keep the kind of fan away from wembley we could do without people that smell with poor trainers and lonsdale track suit bottoms .

Yes wembley is the way forward !!!!!!!!

Cardiff has not been laid on pallets for about 5 years now. Not sure how it works these days as when the rallying was there in November last year, they had the concrete floor on show. No idea how they moved the grass/turf!
