Wembley Hopes

Recommended Posts

The sky coverage seems to have done little to increase numbers thorough the turnstiles, what is needed is coverage in the national media-the only way to get this is to get the sport back in the capital, where there is currently none!! I would hate to see cardiff go as it is a wonderful day out,but if sweeden and poland can host 2 GPs,then why cant we?-at the time of the last wembley world final in 81,(and allowing for the diversity of other entertainment now available)speedway was a "biggie",sadly(and the lack of british talent-understandable given the lack of training/practise facilities)plus the lack of speedway in the capital have been major reasons for the sports decline-although cardiff is wonderful we need to get back in london to raise the profile(and maybe the allowance for training future stars) for the sport

Lets hope wembley comes back to host the gp again, it would cost a lot more with beer being 4 pound  a pint and no one would be able to stay in a hotel before the event due  to the cost .

Would keep the kind of fan away from wembley we could do without people that smell with poor trainers and lonsdale track suit bottoms .

Yes wembley is the way forward !!!!!!!!

sorry Orion but that was a completely unresearched statement..................

Q. What happens to the price of hotels in Cardiff on GP weekend?

A. They double or triple in price

Q. What would happen to the prices in London on GP weekend

A. Absolutely nothing outside of a few mile radius because speedway will hardly be sending shockwaves throughout the city's hotel industry

Q. Are hotel prices more expensive in London?

A. probably........but judging from THIS not a great deal more

and if you can't afford a quid a pint more for your 2 or 3 pints bought in the venue then perhaps you should stick with club speedway.............either that or subtract it from the savings that you have made on your hotel or train fare ;)

p.s. when was the last time you visited the Wembley area? I suggest a bit of chav spotting next time...........you'll probably get a high score :o

Yes, within a 5 mile radius of the stadium. I bet within a 5 mile radius of Wembley they raise their prices too!

AH! this si where this little pet theory goes ** up, you say "London", now how big is London? Lets assuming I randomly book a hotel in London, how far am I from Wembley? Possibly 40-odd miles. So when booking a hotel for Cardiff try futher out in Cardiff, Newport, Neath, Swansea, Bristol! Only the centre of Cardiff goes up.

Every penny counts! We're not all as rich as you clearly are ;)

How much do you save on a train in London then? Personally, I can't see me being able to pay less than £3 as I do now :P

If you want to stay in the centre of Cardiff on a weekend when the Millenium Stadium is on use, expect to pay a premium. If you want to stay within 5 miles of Wembley while the stadium is in use expect to pay a premium.

DONT try and compare the prices in Cardiff with London as London is so much bigger you're so much further away from the stadium in the majory of the place. At least play fair and get quites from within 5 miles of the Millenium Stadium and 5 miles of Wembley. Then try 10 miles. See what the difference is!

I'm all for a Wembley GP but NOT at the expense of Cardiff.

yes this is exactly what I was suggesting is it not??

indeed and I agree .....last year I booked a hotel just outside of Newport.........but how do the local transports compare Shawn?.......and the same applies to London.........there is a 20 mile radius outside of greater London which could also be used for Hotels

See above.  Newport, Bristol, Neath, Swansea....

this isn't relevant........my reply was in response to Orion saying that London hotels would be more expensive which is false

you are missing the point I think.........the fact that it would be possible to get from Wembley to Kings Cross, Victoria, Liverpool St etc etc on the day and after the GP means that it could potentially save on two nights in a hotel for some

for those choosing to stay over then the money spent on those crucial 3 pints in the stadium will be a drop in the ocean when comparing the potential savings made with hotels and transportation

If you want to stay in the centre of Cardiff on a weekend when the Millenium Stadium is on use, expect to pay a premium.  If you want to stay within 5 miles of Wembley while the stadium is in use expect to pay a premium.

obviously

please read my earlier post Shawn..........i'd expect you to have an agenda on this issue but not at the expense of being blind to what others are actually saying.......I like Cardiff and wouldn't want it to be taken off the fixture list .....ever! It is possible for us, just like the Swedes and the Poles, to sustain two GP's

It is very doubtful that Wembley would share the same pre meeting atmosphere as Cardiff purely because of the location..........so we are talking about a different experience within the ground....the rest is just logistics in getting to and from the stadium..........

people would be staying further away as the crow flies BUT you do not take into consideration the transportation system............people could stay in East London and be a respectable amount of time away from the ground due to the tube...............people could stay in St Albans or Stevenage for example and not be far away time wise

Cardiff has trains and busses. Staying in Newport, Bristol, Neath etc is viable. I always manage to get home from Cardiff just fine using public transport. So I don't quite understand the 2 days in a hotel thing. Arrive in Cardiff on Saturday morning/afternoon, book into hotel, see GP, go back to hotle and sleep, leave Cardiff the next day.

Cardiff even has it's own airport, so it's not exactly out in the sticks and impossible to get to/from!

South Wales is NOT the other side of the World! (unless you're Australian)

Please don't think I'm rubbishing the Wembley GP idea. I just don't see how logistically it's that much better than Cardiff, I certainly don't believe it's cheaper!

You know, i read with interest the threads about Cardiff vs Wembley and comments made in favour of the Welsh option seem to centre around Hotels, Bars, pubs, Atmosphere, etc.etc..

Well for those who like that (and i'm not saying there is anything wrong with it), we've had 6 years of that so far with more to come, so at the risk of being unpopular i'd like to put a case forward for those of us who prefer to drive to the event, watch the event, and then drive home again on the same day. In other words - go to watch speedway.

For me going to cardiff involves a good 6 hours total driving, being charged to cross a bridge !!!, and getting there 5 hours early in order to hunt for a parking space.

Wembley would be closer with a huge car park and no bloody bridge.

You can't please all the people all the time, but i wouldn't mind a bit of give and take - alternate years and venues perhaps ?.

maybe you dont understand because you have generally lived relatively locally....as concrete cowboy points out...there are various approaches that fans take to GP's......and they are from all over the country...not just from the local area

for example i'm usually designated driver for the journey to and from......which then gives us the option of staying over or not..........well we baulk at paying the ridiculously hiked up prices so we then look further afield which then asks the question of how we are getting there.........I would suggest that the train system is fairly basic and infrequent and buses require local knowledge (how are you going to know when you have arrived otherwise?!)...............so it usually just ends up with me driving to and from and then making the promise to myself every year that it won't happen again the next year as it is too much

The very nature of the transport system means it reduces flexibility dramatically and forces people to either stay in the city centre or to stay sober and drive out ....and unless Newport is important enough the next day.. if you have started driving you may as well carry on

Cardiff even has it's own airport, so it's not exactly out in the sticks and impossible to get to/from!

well it is fairly irrelevant for me but I would be interested to hear from others about prices and if it was worth a flight in the end

Please don't think I'm rubbishing the Wembley GP idea.  I just don't see how logistically it's that much better than Cardiff, I certainly don't believe it's cheaper!

i'm no trainspotter or hotel connoiseur but I would have thought it was obvious how logistically it is streets ahead and cheaper

although as I have said before all that considered I would not want it being at the expense of Cardiff

This would be fine but many of the hotels will only accept a two night booking.

*note to self: don't attempt to have an adult discussion with Orion*

Spook,

Orion is one of the stars of our firmament on here. You really need to look behind and beyond what he writes and see the twinkle in his eyes. I'd best not make any comments about heavenly bodies though!

You would be well advised not to make spirited comments such as the above. They could return to haunt you.

Ron.

I think most people just want easy access , somewhere to park , and most return home the same day . My missus also wants decent shops, so Cardiff fits the bill nicely . Have attended many cup finals at Wembley to support the Arse , and always park well away from Wembley and travel on a packed Tube .

Poor infrastructure in that area .

I am a Londoner, but can only afford crap trainers from Shoe Express..£7.99 , and Lonsdale gear (which suits me Orion as it carries the London name ) .

Not too smelly as I wear Hai-Karate after shave from Poundland , £1 a gallon .

my vivid memory of a wembley world final was being packed on the tube like sardines there and back and being escorted like some riotious football fans. you don't get that in cardiff!!!!!!

They don't have a tube !
