AndyM
76 was great - PC proved conclusively that you don't have to gate in every race to become world champ! His race against Louis and Simmo was breathtaking.

south coast robin
Have only seen the '63 and '78 finals at Wembley . Great occasions , and yes probably the last time we will see an 80,000 crowd at speedway
Steve Turner
Not my favourite final, Wembley '81, but a great meeting all-the-same. Lots of memories...but I'll tell you the silliest one. I went to fetch hot-dogs for Dad, my brother and me and just as I carried the three of them back into the actual 'arena' at the top of the stairs, the guy on the mic announced some rider or other...the crowd went berserk ...and muggins here dropped the hotdogs I caught one, which suddenly became mine...the other two hit the floor, which after a little sausage rotation to hide the grit, became Dad's and brothers
spinkox
nopethe 54-54 draw between England and USA was much better racing. wish i had that on video <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I know this is changing the subject from world finals- but THIS was the best meeting Ive ever been to - went to the next round at Poole - for a very average meeting . . . Grachan
Me too, Alexsandr Pavlov makes The Gaffer look sane!! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He's class isn't he. Your type of rider no doubt Frigbo! Ole Olsen's first race is just amazing. A sort of: 'Oh, ooh, go on, oh my God, yes, yes, go on, oh my God he's... OH NO!!!' type of race. Great stuff. Great stuff. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Definitely Graham. any headbanger will do for me Some of his starts were more dodgy than Greg Hancock's!! Olsen was simply brilliant, personally he's my all time number 1. i bet he regrets that big bomb around Lofqvist and the subsequent fall. With hindsight, the 2nd place he had brilliantly gained in that heat would have sufficed for the title.

Ole learned from his own mistakes by the look of it!
Gemini
Am i really the only person in the world who thinks the '81 Final is overrated??The Olsen and Knudsen v Penhall races are both top drawer, but the rest of the racing is pretty mediocre i'd say. Rosey Specs for most i suspect. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I agree! Watch the meeting again on video and it's not that good, apart from the races you mention. The atmosphere was though and the sheer volume of supporters in the stadium that night is probably the reason why that final is looked upon as one of the best by so many people. Tigerblade
Lol me and my dad were on that coach aswell TB,the front wheel went on the Parkway, after a few hours one of the other coaches came back up the m1 to pick us up and we made it to Wembley about an hour before the start. Bradford, wet,Shawn 88 Vojens,Per Jonsson gets excluded cos Hans Neilsen rides straight into the back of him outta turn 2...always wondered about that one! 89 Munich,IF only Roman had done what he did in the last race first time out it might not have been the bore fest it was, which was put three quarters of his bike over the white line and use the wooden boarding on the inside of the bends thus changing the racing line totally! Am i really the only person in the world who thinks the '81 Final is overrated?? The Olsen and Knudsen v Penhall races are both top drawer, but the rest of the racing is pretty mediocre i'd say. Rosey Specs for most i suspect. Somehow I knew someone else from the forum would have been on that coach I couldn't remember the exact malfunction, but that explains why it ended up limping up Prince of Wales Road.. No Frigbo, I don't think it was that special either - it was only the atmosphere and the fact it was completely different to anything I'd ever seen at speedway before then, that made it stand out. Ha, 1988 Vojens - that decision was made even worse by the fact that Jan O. Pedersen had put someone into the fence on the first bend a couple of heats earlier and that one was deemed unsatisfactory start with all four back!! Although like my mum said "come off it, was he ever going to exclude a Dane at Vojens". I only ever saw the 1989 Final on video, the only thing that stood out was Roman doing that! sliderphil
My god - 25 years ago??? Stuff like that makes me feel old..... We had a chaotic build up to it - ..... Not to mention Dave Jessup and his jubilee clip, .....!!! Yes, I was a Reading Racers fan at that time and was of course willing DJ on. I'm convinced he would have been world champion if his carburettor had not fallen off! Does anyone remember just how far ahead of the other three he was. It was unbelievable!! Poor DJ. There's been many riders over the years who didn't win it, but Dave Jessup had the talent and ability to REALLY do it. Can you imagine how he felt??? longlivefrankie
i think 72 was better to...mauger pocning about at the start of the run off with persson , or have i imagined that? ive been to all the cardiff gp's and am yet to experience anything that comes close to the wembley finals i was priveliged to see 72, 75, 78 & 81 the sheer excitement factor made hte hairs on the back of your neck satnd up. i do also think i knew i was in the presence of greats like briggs, mauger, olsen etc not so sure these days perhaps tv has taken the edge of it for me at that level. hullangel
The 81 final was one of the best for two reasons. It was a great meeting, and me and my mate managed to persuade two girls to go with us It cost us a bloody fortune , but they were worth it Also well ripped of at B and B.........
