FIM SPEEDWAY GRAND PRIX GOES GREEN

BENFIELD Sports International, rights holders of the FIM Speedway Grand Prix Series, has announced Miljöpartiet de Grona, Sweden's Green political party as title sponsor of the FIM Scandinavian Speedway Grand Prix in a unique sponsorship deal.

The event, that takes place on 23 August at Sweden's national sporting arena, Ullevi Stadium, Gothenburg, will be officially known as the FIM Miljöpartiet Scandinavian Speedway Grand Prix and is the first time a world championship motorsport has been sponsored by a political party, let alone endorse the sport's environmental principles.

"We want to highlight to people that even within motorsport, environmental improvements can be made." explains Håkan Wåhlstedt, secretary Miljöpartiet de Grona. "Riders and fans alike can attend these events safe in the knowledge that you can protect the environment and still enjoy sports events like the FIM Speedway Grand Prix Series.

"London based Benfield Sports International also has no contracts with tobacco advertisers for the Speedway Grand Prix Series, which is a welcome contrast to Formula One and other motorsports." concluded Wåhlstedt.

John Postlethwaite, Chief Executive, Benfield Sports International commented: "Miljöpartiet de Grona has realised the huge media interest the Grand Prix Series generates in Sweden and Scandinavia and seized the opportunity to communicate their environmental message to a wider audience. We are delighted to welcome them on board.

"I think it's important people realise that you can enjoy a wide variety of activities in life, whilst at the same time respect the environment we live in and that we will be leaving for our children."

The FIM Speedway Grand Prix Series operates a number of environmental initiatives including:

The 500cc motorbikes used by the 24 top riders in the world for the FIM Speedway Grand Prix Series world championship run on high-octane pure methanol, emitting insignificant levels of exhaust fumes.

All bikes are fitted with silencers to reduce noise levels.

The oil used is mainly rape-oil and engines without closed lubricating systems use a tray to collect the used oil, this is recycled via special stations in the pit area.

Only high pressure water, with no added solvents or cleaning agents, is used to clean each bike.

The track surface consists of natural shale and at the man-made tracks where the material is brought in to build a track, once it is removed it is either returned to the quarry or stored to be used to build another track.

Makes me laugh the chilled out Swedes sponsor our sport for its environmental qualities whilst the British facist councillors ban it whenever a pensioner turns up there hearing aid.

Oooh I can feel a sauna coming on

Nice to know only high pressure water is used can't be bothered with that low stuff.
