Keeping Speedway Alive

I think it would be a great idea to revive defunct teams at their nearest track, if the locals could deal with watching a close rival team at their track. although i'm sure most speedway supporters would settle for seeing another team alive and kicking.

it's such a shame to look on www.speedwayplus.co.uk and see so many old tracks no longer running.

maybe the popularity of the sport will always mean speedway supporters are second class citizens in the battle for serious consideration to be given by local council to allow racing.

speedway has a massive heritage in the uk, and I would love to see a few old race jackets (many i've never had the pleasure of watching) flying around our limited number of tracks, and lets hope more promoters are open to the idea if it gathers more momentum.

anyway good luck to the likes of sunderland in making the first steps in a long and uncertain road to revival.

Well in recent days we have seen Birmingham comeback after years in the dark and that is a good boost for the sport. But really Speedway should be getting back to the big cities like Liverpool, Bristol and Norwich that used to have teams. If you look in the UK you will see some counties do not even have one team. Part of the problem is councils as most reject the idea of having a speedway track as some like the public have the wrong idea of the sport. Maybe what they could do is when they apply they could take some to a meeting so they see that fans are not Hells Angels like some think and see the atmosphere is good and also the that Speedway can be a exciting sport with traffic in and out of the stadium not as bad as other sports.

Another idea is that promoters get together at the end of season conference and produce a booklet and disc for councils and local residents so when people look at applying to create a team they can show them what it is all about and erase all them bad ideas that they have. :)

Precisely..there is a misconceived idea that speedway fans are biker/hells angel types ( as most are in Australia ) ,yet speedway is a family sport , much more than soccer . Would rather have speedway than football in my backyard .

My brother lives in Oz , and regularly attends meetings ...he says that most Aussies just go to look at the bikes , unlike here where few fans are bikers themselves .Someone with a programme board is a rarity over there .

This has really interested me- as I'm about to move within 1/3rd of a mile of nton raceway, I'd be keen on any revival of the Brafield Badgers after 50 years! probably never happen, but the track has to be in the best location of any not currently in use- no houses around it and off the A43 roundabout that services nton and the M1- a great location for all the fans from Milton Keynes and up north who aren't near a convenient track. It's predominantly a stock car track, but a great shape for speedway. No one interested in prmoting th4ere though I suppose!!

Ditto!

I have long thought that Brafield stock car stadium would make a good venue for a CL team.

It would already have permission for motorsports and isn't near houses so the old noise thing shouldn't crop up.

It is within easy reach of most parts not being far from the M1 in the centre of the Country near Northampton.

Tony Mole investigated the situation at Brafield a while back.

I think a Northampton 'Brafield Badgers' speedway team running at Brafield stadium could work in the CL.

It would act as a nursery track to Midland/East Anglian tracks.

At one time the Brafield Flying Foxes were promoted by Paddy Mills in the real Southern Area League but problems arose and a number of riders got suspended when the track licence was revoked. Another local track around there was Earls Barton but they were not in the League.

Incarace - who also run Birmingham Wheels and Hednesford - control Northampton, and have done for years.

It's very much a Brisca F1 and Brisca F2 stock car venue, 'big league stuff'. That seems to be on the list of plans now for Wimbledon as well.

If Incarace ever agree to speedway at Northampton Stadium (Brafield) just how would a speedway be laid? Not another lay-on then left-off shale venture that failed at places like Wimbledon, Skegness and Rye House?

Yes, I remember the old Norwich rider Paddy Mills running an SAL team at Brafield. Had an after-the-meeting practice ride there in 1954. Their top man was Vic Hall, who also rode at Leicester.

There was another speedway venture at Brafield in the mid-1960s. That also failed. Since then its been stock cars and Hot Rods - and top class racing is provided by these formulas.
