Swedish Season Gets Going

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow, on May 2nd, the Swedish Elitserien starts.

Below you´ll find some comments regarding the opening round, and line-ups of course.

VÄSTERVIK - MASARNAAVESTA

Last season champion Västervik open up their season at home in the round´s most interesting meeting, against MasarnaAvesta (previously Masarna). Pawel Hlib and Chris Harris makes their Västervik debut after signing from Kaparna during the winter, but the management duo of Olsson/Johansson have surprisingly left Niels-Kristian Iversen out of the line-up and opted for Tomasz Chrzanowski at number one.

MasarnaAvesta field an excellent top five, newcomer Lukas Dryml (from Vargarna) usually rides very well at Västervik and with the other four classy riders, MasarnaAvesta will always be a tough team to beat. Much pressure will be on Sebastian Aldén to limit the damages in the two reserve heats as they can´t rely on Johan Liljegren to beat either Harris or Johansson.

A wide open meeting which could go either way. Västervik didn´t lose a meeting at home last year but could be in trouble if they can´t find a way to handle Seb Aldén at reserve for MasarnaAvesta.

BAJEN SPEEDWAY - PIRATERNA

Newcomers Bajen Speedway from capital Stockholm start the season without Nicki Pedersen in the line-up. Instead of choosing the Riders Replacement option, manager Ruben Lindeborg has opted for a team with strength in depth to match the oppostion reserve duo of Davidsson/Andersson. Adam Skornicki and Jesper B Jensen could be busy boys if anyone of the others struggle. Piotr Swiderski makes an interesting start after smashing most opposition in Allsvenskan last season while Stefan Dannö, late replacement for the retired Peter Nahlin, goes straight into the team at number five.

Piraterna have a team similar to Bajen Speedway (in this round), without a real star name like Rickardsson in MasarnaAvesta or Jonsson in Luxo Stars. Robert Kosiecha is back from Rospiggarna and takes a place in the opening line-up instead of Damian Balinski, a bit surprising to be honest.

So the two teams looks evenly matched and to predict an outcome is surely tricky, but as this will be Bajen Speedway´s first meeting at home, and without Nicki Pedersen, the Pirates have an excellent opportunity to an away win in this opening round of Elitserien.

SMEDERNA - LUXO STARS

After the losses of Nicki Pedersen and Jesper B Jensen to Bajen Speedway during the off-season, Smederna are looking to newcomers Robert Sawina and Wieslaw Jagus to match the points scored by Pedersen/Jensen. Scott Nicholls take over as the number one of the team, the one to producing big point totals for the team. The predictions are there every season, that "this season will be Scott´s", it hasn´t materialised yet, but it could happen now.

The same could be said about Hans Andersen in Luxo Stars who seems to be racking up points everywhere and this is the season he should break through in style in Sweden, proving BSI made the wrong choice regarding the Wild Cards. Andreas Jonsson could be missing this meeting, no definite news have been published yet though.

With doubts over Jonsson and Max still recovering from his last season injury, Luxo Stars could be in trouble at Smederna. The home team must be considered favourites for this one, especially as Howe/Andersson looks a bit stronger down at reserve as well.

INDIANERNA - ROSPIGGARNA

A crucial meeting for the lower regions in the final standings is already taking place in the first round action of Elitserien. Indianerna welcomes Matej Ferjan from Västervik and he should be a solid signing backing-up Piotr Protasiewicz. Much points should also come for Rafal Okoniewski and Magnus Zetterström, one of several strong reserve duos in the opening round.

Another strong duo is definitely the Slabon/Staszewski combination in Rospiggarna. They should be good enough too score plenty of points beside Greg Hancock and Janusz Kolodziej, the latter could be the trumph card for Rospiggarna in the fight to avoid relegation.

With the home track advantage, Indianerna should edge out Rospiggarna in this one. In reality it looks wide open though, much depends on if Kolodziej could step up as a genuine heat leader behind Hancock, but even if that happen I have a feeling the second strings will prove decisive in this one.

Indianerna:

1. Rory Schlein

2. Henrik Gustafsson ©

VMS ELIT - VARGARNA

Last years silver medalist VMS Elit starts up at home to Vargarna. The Vetlanda outfit welcomes Jaroslaw Hampel and Peter Ljung into the team, Ljung actually started his career in the VMS Elit 80cc team several years ago. Rune Holta was nominated to ride at number five but will miss his first league meeting since 2001 after a crash in Poland on Sunday, squad member Jason Crump will take his place in the line-up.

Vargarna, a candidate for the relegation spot, comes to Vetlanda without Adam Shields and will rely heavily on Matej Zagar and Niklas Klingberg who rides the track well. The British duo of Norris and Screen have several points to prove after some bad scores at the track in recent years. Team manager Åke Bergström originally nominated Dave Watt as number 2 and Emil Lindqvist as number 7, but with the signing of Paul Hurry it seems he will take the number 2 jacket while Watt drops to reserve instead of Lindqvist.

That move would definitely make Vargarna stronger, but VMS Elit should win this comfortable. However, next week at Vargarna will be something much different...

VMS Elit:

1. Lee Richardson

2. Peter Ljung

3. Jaroslaw Hampel

4. Tomasz Jedrzejak

SWEDISH ELITSERIEN ROUND 1

Tuesday May 2nd 2006

VÄSTERVIK - MASARNAAVESTA 46-50

Attendence: 2684

MasarnaAvesta, without Tony Rickardsson, pulled off an upset by turning around a 33-39 deficit to a 50-46 win in only four heats. Leigh Adams was in extraordinary form with a paid 21 maximum with solid back-up from both Lindbäck and Lindgren. At reserve, Sebastian Aldén kept the meeting against the opposition reserves close, only losing by a total of 8-9 against Johansson/Harris, numbers that should have been bigger for Västervik if they had counted on a win. Anyway, a strong team performence by MasarnaAvesta chocked the champions Västervik at their own track, what a surprise!

BAJEN SPEEDWAY - PIRATERNA 39-57

Attendence: 2596

Newcomers Bajen Speedway lead after a second double victory in the reserves races, 34-32 after eleven heats, but then they crashed and burned. Piraterna scored five unanswered 5-1's in the final five heats to win it by a comfortable eighteen point margin.

The home side scored heavily at reserve but had no answer to the outstanding quartet of the away team, scoring 50 paid 55 between them. Impressive victory after all, but Bajen surely can´t wait until Nicki Pedersen is back in the line-up...

SMEDERNA - LUXO STARS 51-45

Attendence: 2194

The home side took command right from the start with a couple of 5-1's, and then controlling the meeting right to the end. Strength in depth proved the better alternative today since Smederna´s riders all had between five and ten points while Luxo Stars lost both reserve races with 2 x 5-1 and seemed to rely heavily on Andersen and Karlsson.

VMS ELIT - VARGARNA 58-38

Attendence: 2412

After a shaky start, VMS Elit pulled away from the mechanical gremlins and sealed the win after the interval. VMS Elit lost several points due to engine failures but Vargarna started well as well, and pushed the home side in several heats before the heat leader trio of Hampel, Richardson and Crump (along with second string newcomer Ljung) clinched the match in the later stages.

Expected win, but that doesn´t mean Vargarna won´t be able to push VMS Elit even further next week. It´s a completely different track and VMS Elit could be in trouble but until next week they sit on the top of the table after the first round of Elitserien.

VMS Elit 58

1. Lee Richardson 2*-3-2-2*-3 = 12+2 (5)

6. David Ruud Ef-1-Ef-3 = 4 (4)

7. Thomas H Jonasson 1-0-0-M = 1 (4)

16 [68.2]: Hampel, Crump, Zagar, Klingberg. 5-1, 58-38.

Didn´t take notes regarding the heats, and my memory is much too week (even though I´m fairly young and I´m too tired as well) to remember most details, but some rider comments though...

For VMS Elit,

Richardson was a bit of a questionmark after a couple of sub-standard performences in the British league, but the doubts were not in order as he performed a good meeting, looked quick. Ljung gated like a rocket and will be a definite asset of VMS Elit. Hampel was a bit trouble by Zagar in the last one but seems to have found the quickest way around Vetlanda already in his first meeting for the club. Excellent. Jedrzejak had a solid second string score, but lacked speed and was passed on several occasions. Crump had an engine failure while leading, would have been a maximum man otherwise. Ruud had a nightmare with two Ef's, one as second and one on a paid win, unlucky but he will come good. Jonasson mixed it in several races but have a bit longer to go before scoring regulary, the track conditions were probably not entirely to his liking this time.

For Vargarna,

Klingberg can so much better, had only one good ride. Hurry was never close to a point. Norris rode better than the score suggested, that must be said, his exclusion in heat three was very harsh and it looked like Jedrzejak should have been excluded but it didn´t happen. However, Norris won´t be a force around the Vetlanda track, that´s the way it is, but should score much better next week. Screen looked OK and fairly quick but faded towards the end. Zagar was always in contention and worth the points he got. Bergström beat Jonasson three times but seemed a lot better overall than before at this track. Watt was very good, provided some stiff opposition but faded dramatically after a strong start. Will score regulary in Elitserien and seems to be a good newcomer for Vargarna.

Man of the match: Jaroslaw Hampel

Most exciting rider: Dave Watt

A few pics from Eskilstuna last night: http://www.albumsnaps.com/?c=folders&fID=10989

It was raining almost all day in Eskilstuna but stopped about 18.00 - 18.30 and then it was a massive trackwork to get all the wet matrial away, and it took a while and the first heat was off at 19.55 instead of 19.00.

Hamill started well, but got an exclusion as his bike packed up before the start of heat 7 and he run out of time and was out, can more!

Sawina was pretty good all night.

KK - It wasnt really his night just 5 points out of 4 starts, but maybe he was having the GP at the weekend in his mind?.

Jagus, pretty decent, but also here he can more.

Nicholls, for a heatleader it was a bad day at work 7+1 on 5 heats is to low on Scottie, but I are quite sure he will go better soon.

Eric Andersson, did that was expected of him.

David Howe was like a steamtrain in his first heat and was a clear winner, but faded. He shall not be beaten by Ricky Kling, David should be to good for it.

Think the reserves will be different next tuesday down in Målilla, Janniro and Risager do I belive in as Smedernas reserve pair.

The attendance was low, but was clearly effected by the rain and cold wheather.
