Matt Read Farewell Meeting

Recommended Posts

Sponsorship packages for Matt Read's Farewell Speedway meeting to be held at Somerset's Oak Tree Arena on Friday September 22nd are now available for anyone interested in supporting Matt in this special event. Matt, who suffered life threatening injuries in a crash during a Longtrack meeting at Morizes, France, in September 2004, is one the unsung heroes of speedway that the sport depends upon and deserves the support of the speedway community for his farewell meeting.

Further details of the packages available can be obtained by contacting Ian Belcher with your contact details at ian_belcher34@hotmail.com and I will pass details on to Matt and Claire.

Matt Read is please to be able to announced the first rider confirmed for his Farewell Speedway Meeting at Somerset's Oak Tree Arena on Friday 22nd September, this being Great Britain international Dave Norris. The Eastbourne star did not even wait to be approached by Read regarding a place in the meeting, 'Floppy' contacting Matt as soon as details were first released!

"To have someone of Floppy's stature to agree to ride is fantastic." said an obviously delighted Read. "I've been overwhelmed by the number of enquiries from riders regarding my meeting and I hope to be announcing further names over the next few weeks." "I know Dave will really enjoy riding the Oak Tree Arena, and the fans will enjoy seeing him ride there."

As well as announcing Norris' participation, Matt has decided that the meeting will take the form of a traditional 7 rider, two team, format raced over 15 heats, the nominated race being contested by the top two scorers from each team. Additionally the fans will be entertained by a freestyle moto-cross demonstration as well has 3 heats of speedway sidecar racing.

"I really want to give the fans an evening to remember." explained Matt. "The fans have been so good to me over the years, and this is my way of saying 'thank you' to them."

Taken from Somerset Rebels Site:

Following hot on the heels of Dave Norris being the first confirmed rider in Matt Read's Farewell Speedway Meeting (September 22nd at Somerset's Oak Tree Arena), Matt is pleased to be able to announce that joining Norris in the line up will be his England and Eastbourne team mate, Dean Barker.

Barker, like Norris, is a stalwart of the Eastbourne team, having spent the majority of his career with the Eagles. His career began in 1986 with the Eagles, when he appeared in fourteen matches which yielded a 3.11 average in his first season of speedway in the second division.

Dean then moved to Cradley Heath in the First Division for the start of the 1987 season, before returning to Eastbourne for the end of the season. In 1987 he increased his second division average to 7.32, and did so again the next year to 9.02, before moving back to the first division with Oxford. After three successful seasons with Oxford, he moved back to Arlington when the Eagles moved into the top-flight. Aside from one season with the Arena Essex Hammers, he has been in the Eastbourne team since.

At a national level, Dean made his first British Championship Final in 1992, finishing in eleventh position. He earned a podium position in the 1995 British Final, after scoring twelve points. His best performance in a British Championship is his second position in 2003, when the competition was held at Arlington.

At an international level, Dean has made fifteen appearances for his country since his debut for England in 1990. That year he rode against Denmark, scoring his first international point. He rode in the Inter-nations Championship in 1991, scoring four points. He appeared in five tests between 1993 and 1999, and also rode in four tests against Sweden. His 2003 World Cup appearance was a highlight; he scored thirty points over three matches in the competition.

"To have riders of the calibre of 'Floppy' and 'Deano' in the line up is fantastic." said a delighted Read. "Hopefully over the next few weeks I will be able to announce further names to the list of confirmations." "I think that the final line up of riders will get the fans excited, I know I am!"
