Blazeaway
Not a bad meeting on Saturday Showing my ignorance but who were the 10 that were seeded through <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You reckon? I thought it was awful, blue groove after heat 8. Did anyone else think the crowd was very poor?
Rob S.
You reckon? I thought it was awful, blue groove after heat 8. Did anyone else think the crowd was very poor? Hi Blazeaway, Some of us on Saturday were discussing this "dark-line" that seems to be appearing half way through a meeting, and wondered if it was black tyre staining on the redder shale Rye are using this season. You can reply with authority on this as I think it was purchased from the Wimbledon track? Wouldnt say it was an "awful" meeting, just that the standard of the field meant that not many mistakes were made after riders made the gate, and overtakes were therefore minimal. The first 5 heats were very quick times indeed (including Neath's quickest time of the season so far - 56.5 in heat 2) showing the track was well prepared and riding very fast early on. Yes seen better, but competitive meeting never-the-less. Also, agree was expecting a bigger attendance. ps. Well done to Ed and Chris, and the four other qualifiers (Hurry, G.Stead, Ashworth, and O.Allen). Edited April 24, 2006 by Rob S.
Blazeaway
Hello mate, no i've never seen this dark line/blue groove at Wimbledon. Maybe awful was a bit harsh, but i've come to expect better at Hoddesdon. The pity is the track is such a great shape, all it would take is a little more dirt and a decent watering and you would have a fantastic racetrack. Aside from this were you aware the Rye track used to be where the go kart track is and was 450 yards long? I wasn't till i read it on saturday in the excellent book Homes of British Speedway. Did anyone else think the crowd was very poor? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep! GP didn't help. I don't understand this obsession with watching "live " GP's on Sky. Far too much waffle and messing around between races. I prefer to go to tape (or SkyPlus for the more affluent) and watch when I get home, skipping all of the rubbish between races. Chris
your lack of speedway knowledge is obviously bourn out of watching it at rye house!! well done ricky-it's nice to be able to ram it down a southerners big gob ......innit! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Suppose you have to try and release your anger after we dumped you out of Premier Trophy and Play offs last season. Still bitter old boy? Oh no now we have to put up with him doing sod all at Belle Vue and wasting a place in the field. With riders like Ashworth in our national final is doesn't say alot. He was half decent out of the gate all night and that was all that was needed on that surface. The shale that Len has purchased off Wimbledon at the start of the season looks mickey mouse. It's almost like a fine, red powder, which won't hold any water or moisture, resulting in a blue groove after the first six heats. Nothing wrong with the watering during the meeting on Saturday as the cart was out after most heats in the first three quarters of the meeting, but can only do so much if the shale is no good. Maybe could have put on a touch more beforehand, but prob wouldn't have made much difference. The blue groove means the riders can just sit on it and they are too quick and with the shale being too fine and the limited dirt so far out at a late stage it gets processional, as it would do at any track. Not a good one too watch in all honesty and the home men dominated, with Kennett having his gating boots on and being untouchable. He will do well at Belle Vue as its his sort of track and could repeat last years British Final performance.

The track was set up purely for home advantage for the best 2 gaters in the Rye Team. Did notice that track preperation went on before every heat that contained a Rye rider

Rob S.
The track was set up purely for home advantage for the best 2 gaters in the Rye Team. BossMan, Obviously didnt read Len's long interview in the S-Star last season then. Len stated that he has always tried to prepare a track that is fair to all riders, and "home" advantage is not his first priority like some tracks, but an entertaining meeting for the public is. Granted this year the racing at Rye hasn't yet lived-up to the high standard we witnessed last season, and I think thats why people are discussing this new shale. Blazeaway, No disrespect intended to Wimbledon and their red shale. The track looks like it has enough dirt on the outside (where they seem to water), but needs more packed-down on the inside to middle line (IMO). As Chris posted earlier, the shale does seem very thin and hence is dispersed to the fence much quicker than usual. Another thing I have noticed, is that the track staff holding the red flags on the corners dont seem to be doing any raking this season. Edited April 25, 2006 by Rob S. How about getting the 2nd bend sorted then, lots of riders struggle there as it falls away towards the fence That would even things up a bit. Yes know what you mean - have seen numerous riders (especially at Conference level) caught-out there. Mind-you, Ed often uses that area to drfit across and get a good run down the back straight. (Showing my age, but can remember Kevin Smith and Marvyn Cox liking that manoeuvre as well. Whatever happened to Coxy after he got a German license? - great English prospect who was lost to the sport too early in my opinion). newbieoldboy
Why choose a gating paradise for such a prestigious meeting? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Only fair way to stage an individual is to hold a GB qualifier on a neutral track like Reading, Poole or Denmark sorry ment Peterborough
