chunky
Does anyone know the clubs Bjorn raced for in the UK and which in which years please? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Bjorn joined Southampton in 1959 until they closed at the end of 1963, then moved on to West Ham in 1964 for just one year. He had quit British speedway by the time he became World Champion in 1965. Steve

iris123
And his name is Knutson. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> And his first name is Björn,goddammittt!!!!!! Well every other person from Sweden called Bjorn spells it Björn,i think
chunky
And his name is Knutson. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm not going to disagree with you (as apparently there is proof that it's only spelt with one 's'), but most people have probably only seen it spelt with two. After all, that's how nearly all books, programmes etc, and even official records, list it. And Iris, sorry about the "Bjorn" instead of the "Björn", I just couldn't be bothered to use my character map... :-) Steve
iris123
No problem,Steve! It is an interesting one, this.Presumably he went through his whole career letting people spell it incorrectly. Are all his medals,World title stuff all spelt incorrectly with 2 s's? Guest Jim Blanchard
Last time I corresponded with him he was enjoying retirement - playing a lot of golf, (which sometimes includes playing trips to Spain) spending time with his grandchildren etc. He has two homes in Sweden, a winter one and summer one. He proved to have been a successful businessman (As did Ove with his haulage business) with a car dealership. I have a more detailed info fax from him somewhere but forgot where I put it for now. As Norman rightly says, incorrectly spelt in all speedway programmes and books etc he does spell his name with one 's'. Proof Here of Surname Spelling

Even authoritative books such as Speedway in London spell it Knutsson with double "s". However, I understand that the correct spelling of his name is with one "s" but when he came to England the programmes and magazines spelt it with two and he couldn't be bothered to correct it so he just let it go. ooops - overlapped with you there, Jim! iris123
Jim,am i right in assuming it wasn't just in Britain, but also in Sweden that his name was spelt with double s?
norbold
The 1961 Malmo World Final programme has it spelt with double s.
Guest Jim Blanchard
I honestly do not know Doug. Nor the answer to your very good question about the medals and trophies. It was his wife that originally put me right in one communication, and then he confirmed it in another as I posted. iris123
On the subject of the Malmö Final, what stadium was that held in.When i went to the Sweden v Denmark U21 test in Malmö last year i thought that was the stadium that held the World Final. The other week reading through an old speedway star i came across an article about the opening of a speedway stadium there and the team trying to get Ove Fundin to make a comeback. This must be the staium i went to,because i didn't look like FIM standard.Maybe it gives some info in the programme or you know the answer anyway? Thanks Jim Edited April 4, 2006 by iris123
norbold
It was called Malmo Stadium. It held 31,000 spectators. It was opened in 1958 and the opening event there was a World Cup match on 8 June 1958. It was administered by the Malmo Athletic Council. The architects were Fritz Jaenecke and Sten Samuelsson. Attached to the stadium were 7 football pitches. The total area of the complex was 50 acres. Does that help?
