Great Yarmouth Stadium

I read recently that Yarmouth Stadium was having a massive facelift. I wondered

whether any potential promoters had looked at running speedway there. The reasons could be as follows:

* Used to run speedway years gone by

* They run Stock Cars and Bangers, so used to running motorsports

* Very near Norwich, always considered a hot bed for speedway, as the firs

was very well supported

* Has a lot of holiday makers in the summer looking for entertainment

* When completed, I understand it will be quite plush

Just a thought.

Regards.

When I was chatting to someone recently they said that there had been talks about Great Yarmouth entertaining speedway but how true that is I don't know, it did come from a reliable source so maybe in the future who knows.

I remember going there about 15 years ago and thinking then it would be a good place to have speedway and if it's had a facelift them even better :approve:

If someone or some people have the get up and go to make it work then why not ! Im sure any stadium owner is open to offers that could generate themselves income these days and as we know the sport is still very popular in that part of the country

Who said nostalgia ain't what it used to be??!!

It good to see the old Yarmouth question given is annual walk. For those new to the Forum there have been a number of discussions regarding this topic.

One of the best replies came from my old chum James Easter who posted this on 25 September 2004:

"I can tell you that any hope of a Track at the YARMOUTH RACE TRACK is a 100% NONE RUNNER.

The Horse Track is next to loads of housing on 2 sides. Add to that a golf course situated in teh centre of the complex. add to that a huge Caravan site on the East side....More chance of teh Ppe being Jewish.

The Stock car track runs 3 nights a week with cars..3 nights a week with Dogs. They do NOT want Speedway...How come...I have tried 3 times.

Similar to situation in norwich...not a prayer...Again I tried for about 8 years and the best I got was the bums rush outa the door.

Sad, but true is that the last person who made noises did immense harm to the cause....

what a shame as it is still a hot bed of interest"

So there you have it. I look forward to reading a similar thread this time next year. Perhaps this could rival reports of the first cuckoo in spring!!

Speedway at Yarmouth would be great. I remember when Ted Courtnell and Alf Weedon promoted there.

But isn't the track all-tarmac now? And with a greyhound track as swell, would there be space for a speedway night as well. Greyhound three nighths, stock cars three times in the summer - what is the spare night.

Has anyone seen inside the stadium and can give an idea about the available space for also putting in a speedway track - I think it's rather tight on operational space anyway.

I was up there last week on hols and went past the stadium on the way to caister castle. The stadium is having work done to it at the moment but I think it would be great to come back maybe conference first.

I agree. Any standard of speedway at any new venue should be encouraged.

 Mr Snackette's report attributed to James Easter is indeed correct. Over the last two years reports have been floated that the Horse Race course near to the Caister Road Stadium was lined up for Speedway and then the Stadium was rumoured to be considering a revamp with room for Speedway in the plans. So far nothing has happened and locals doubt whether it will ever see the light of a planning application at either site

What nights would speedway be run?

Don't know the greyhound days, but stock cars operate three times a week - on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Also, isn't the track tarmac? It is a fairly tight circuit - how would a speedway be laid?

Not another infamous overlay and lift job as happened at Skegness (1990s) and briefly at Wimbledon (2002).

I was at teh Satdium last week with the owners working on a new project, but not discussing the possibility of a Track.

they are spending about 500k on new grandstands. the track is solid deeply laid tarmac with a figure 8,plus a luxuriant Greyhound track.

For the last (hopefully) time...there is sadly less than a snowflakes chance in hell of getting Speedway back at Caister Road.

Lovely dreams, but reality should take a higher place in your thoughts.

As for Norwich.....well....

I have further checked the use of the stadium by stock cars and greyhounds. Besides stock cars on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday - where has a speedway ever staged three meetings a week and this has been a practice for years - there are greyhounds on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. That just leaves Friday for an unlikely speedway return - and also with no alternative day for a postponed or revised meeting.

I think a Yarmouth speedway return is about as likely as seeing New Cross or West Ham reopening!

It worked succesfully at Rye in 2000 but i haven't ever been to the stadium only seen pictures in a banger racing magazine my uncle who used to do bangers gave me in about 1998 so its obviously changed a lot

Did it work at Rye House? Wasn't that the reason for the parting of the way between Spedeworth and Len Silver?

Come on sg, lighten up..!

Any stadium like this which remains standing has to present some opportunity for the return of Speedway... :o

Gosh! The past has come back to haunt me! How long ago was that posting? Beware - what you say, it may come back to haunt you one day!

Sadly, I think you will find how Yarmouth is currently laid out for stock cars and greyhounds it may be hard to put in a speedway.

Great if they did. I remember Billy Bales was a great rider there.
