Further to Kevin Hammonds post, i note on the excellent site

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/intspeedway/index.htm that there was

an international challenge series held in 1964 on PL tracks between

England, Overseas, Scotland and Wales.

Scotland included

Les McGillivaray

Howdy Byford (surely a cockney)

Geoff Penniket

Vic White

Wales included

Jon Erskine

Pete Vandenberg (Dutch/Australian??)

Alby Golden

Norman Strachan (pronounced strawn)

Is this another case of promoters "artistic" license or were

all these actually those nationalities?????

I'm sure all you clever clogs will know

Apart from Peter Vandenberg, I am certain they were all English. I remember meeting Peter when he first arrived in England. His name on bike was Peter van den Berg. He was the son of Dutch emigrants to Australia. There was an early row over whether he was a Dutchman or an Aussie - in the end the latter was agreed by the authorities here.
