Main Man
Courtesy of Steve Evans : The 2006 US Dream Team came from 8 down to beat the World Aces 52 -44 at Perris Raceway, California on February 19th. The 8 a-side, 16 heat team match provided thrilling support to the Gumball Rally, the presigious event for Under 16 riders, organised by 1996 World Champion Billy Hamill. The Aces team consisted of 3 Swedish visitors, A US junior with New Zealand origins, and 4 US riders with present or near future International experience. After three heats the Dream Team trailed 13-5. Falls to Tim Gomez (when on a 5-1 in heat 3 with Buck Blair) and Chris Kerr gifted 5-1s to the Aces. Kerr, in possibly his last race with the Dream Team before joining Redcar, withdrew unhurt after damaging his bike. Dario Galvin, of the Aces, also withdrew after hurting his back in heat 2. The Dream Team pairing of Blair & Gomez reeled of 3 5-1's in a spirited fightback. Dream Team's Steve Evans said of the result, "This was a great display against tough competition. We were encouraged by the performance of our three new members for 2006. Nate Perkins, our captain rides really well with Neil Facchini, and started strong with 2 wins. Buck Blair would have gotten a maximum were it not for heat two being stopped with him leading. Matt Browne rode intelligently, picking up valuable points and using his team racing knowledge well from the West Coast Speedway League. Our fourth newcomer, Adam Mittl, lives in New York so was not present. He did practice with some team members in January and looked the part. Tim Gomez really was impressive after his fall, and his partnership with Blair turned the match." The Aces were led by a paid maximum by Swede Robban Tornquist. He was backed up with 10 points from the fence scraping Tommy Hedden. Scorers: Dream Team USA 52: Buck Blair 13 (5), Nate Perkins 9 (4), Shaun Harmatiuk 9 (4), Tim Gomez 8+3 (5), Dale Facchini 5+1 (4), Matt Browne 4+4 (5), Neil Facchini 4+1 (4), Chris Kerr 0 (1) World Aces 44: Robban Tornquist 11+1 (4), Tommy Hedden 10 (5), Skyler Greyson 9 (4), Ricky Wells 8 (4), Simon Gustafsson 2+2 (5), Bryan Yarrow 2+1 (4), Jonas Messing 2+1 (6), Dario Galvin 0 (1)
