Reading Host World Cup?

Recommended Posts

Pity it can't be held at Coventry then everyone would be able to see okay as the stadium holds 20,000 or more.

But I suppose the dogs have priority these days.  :(

They do unfortunately when the TV rights bring in a substantial amount of income which when broken cost a lot more money. :(

Maybe discussions should take place 1 or 2 years in advance allowing time to plan properly. Any normal business would be projecting like this so why not speedway

Taken from the CET :

* COVENTRY have turned down the chance to host both the race-off and final of the 2006 Speedway World Cup.

John Postlethwaite, chief executive of BSI, the rights holders of the SWC, wanted to stage the meetings at Brandon, but Bees were unable to accommodate the final on Saturday July 22 because of greyhound commitments.

They offered either Friday, July 21, or Sunday, July 23, but the TV scheduling requires the meeting to be staged on Saturday. It is now set to take place at Reading, the new Elite League track acquired by BSI during the winter.

Having seen Reading on the TV last night, I sincerely hope massive improvements are done to both the stadium and the track before the World Cup. Looked ramshackle and as mentioned before goes against the previous philosophy of BSI to try and give a positive image of the sport.

And ladies - have a pee before you get there or practice your standing up technique!!

The loo's were disgusting. It was like a portacabin (in fact it WAS a portacabin) with water all over the floor and no where to hook your bag and the bottoms of your jeans dragged in this 'water'.

Absolutely horrid.

When are we going to get a confirmed venue - was it shazzy or Rabbit that laughed about getting a text message in Poland telling them of the next secret location - I am beginning to think they may be closer to the truth!! :D

Whilst I agree that the facilities at Reading leave a lot to be desired I cannot say that this is any worse than when I travelled to Denmark for the SWC in 2004! The only blessing there was Vojens at least had real toilets etc! the rounds at Outrup were rather scary! sharing portaloo's with the men (not the best fun I have ever had)

Not me, not lived yet  I'm still wanting Eastbourne to get given the SWC :approve:

Everyone quite rightly is going on about the stadium but is the track fit to host a world final.

The FIM have strict rules on the size of a track being used for a FIM meeting with the straights being on measurment and also the width of the bends and if I remember rightly Reading is not the widest of tracks.

Reading has hosted FIM events in the past....or at least I think it has! I have this vague recollection of seeing a WTC qualifier from there many, many years ago.

Of course, the FIM rules regarding tracks could have changed drastically since then.

Wasn't Ole at the track earlier in the year? Was that not to check it for suitability for the WTC...or was it just to advise on preparation for their first league meeting :P:D

We are talking the dogs danglies of a meeting, if the track does not improve drastically soon there will be unhappy fans that have had the Reading Experience already and could find the WTC being a damp squid, people taking the option to stay at home, rather than pay out for a meeting which as my ignorant partner says "first out the trap wins yawn yawn yawn" B)

Not sure about Reading track, but FIM rules regarding this are:

Track length : from 265 m to 425 m

Minimum track width :

- straights : 10 m

- bends : 14 m

Yes, Reading staged WTC qualifier (overseas final) in 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1983.
