Wembley Gp Event

Recommended Posts

Cardiff wins every time. The day they move speedway (back) to Wembley is the day I stop going to the British GP.

Goodness me..: isn't anyone going to stick up for London on this one..??!!

As Kevin says he (and I.. - and we don't ALWAYS agree, eh, KH..??!!) wasn't suggesting Wembley instead of Cardiff but in addition.

IMO, the new Olympic Stadium would probably be a better bet...: no football 'baggage' there and will have the happy coincidence of being so close to the former home of Hackney Speedway.

All I'd say is, haven't some of you just considered the difference in profile, though, a GP (or better still a proper World Final) at Wembley (or otherwise in London - eg after 2012 in the Olympic Stadium) would have. I don't exactly see the national media fallin' over themselves to cover the annual meeting in South Wales..!!!??

The same national media who whine about having to go to Cardiff for Cup Finals because they have to get off their fat London butts. Most football and RL fans seem to prefer Cardiff because ,as we know,it is a great day out.

10 years ago in early 1996, as a Newport fan we had been without speedway for 18 and a half years. Cardiff, Neath and Newport were long gone and it looked as if we fans "over the bridge" would have to continue getting our fix elsewhere. Here we are in 2006 and Newport is entering its 10th season in the new era and Cardiff is established as THE event in the whole of the speedway calendar. How surreal is that? Thank you Tim Stone and thank you BSI!

I can't see how anyone can argue with that :approve: - and long may it continue.

Totally agree with everyone here that Cardiff should be left alone. The city has everything within a stones throw of the stadium, lots of bars and shops etc. I cannot see us being awarded an additional GP at the moment but you never know and the only time I would think that Wembley would replace Cardiff is when and I say when as it will happen, we reach maximum capacity for the British GP at Cardiff and they have to look elsewhere in order for the stage to grow.

For me it is just as easy to get to Cardiff as London as I can fly or drive. I have been to Hackney and I do not know London that well but I can imagine Wembley will be the same as Hackney in that, it is stuck out in the middle of nowhere with nothing around it, so if you arrive early, you have nothing to do for the rest of the day until the event starts, unlike Cardiff, where you can have a good drink and a chat with fellow fans and a bit of shopping for the ladies as well.

So Cardiff gets my vote everytime.

Hmm, notwithstanding the fact that NO-ONE has suggested replacing Cardiff with a London Venue (Wembley or the Olympic Stadium)..: I do feel that I've entered the twilight zone here...!!

LONDON is now apparently a place in the middle of nowhere; where's there's nothing to do; and now, we hear: no shops or pubs..??!!

And it's strange how Football fans have in the main been longing for the return of Wembley having had many problems with travel and especially accomadation during the time the FA Cup Final's been in Cardiff..??!!

No, the point being made is that Wembley, rather like Twickenham, is a rather faceless suburb of London. You're surely not going to claim that Wembley is only a stone's throw from Oxford Street?

  • 3 weeks later...

Just a thought ...If you were BSI and running the GP and there was a new Stadium would you not want to get in and be the first company to hold a speedway meeting at Wembley...think of all that money coming in.

And not from Reading either

It seems to me that most supporters on here are very happy that speedway should continue as a minority sport and that as long as we are happy with our own little world then that's fine. For the already committed, of course Cardiff is a great day out but it's never going to attract the press or TV in a way that holding a GP at Wembley would. Maybe that's what most people want, not to be disturbed by the thousands more supporters we might attract. That's OK. But, let's not see on other threads these same people complaining about the lack of national media coverage of the sport.

There is an awful lot of truth in that,Norbold.I get the impression a lot of fans love to have their own little area reserved, spread out, bring the dog, have a little chat with the person who always occupies the neighbouring "space",not too much mind! They wouldn't like the football style atmosphere and crowds that attend Polish speedway, with their banners and smoke flares.Last year when i pointed out Cardiff was planned the same night as a big football match the response was "we don't get media coverage anyway!".Speedway in Britain needs Wembley regardless as to whether it stays at Cardiff

I had to laugh at that Iris as the description fits me perfectly. :D

I've stood (or sat) on the same step for the past 20 odd years at Brandon and the people I'm with have been in that very same place for over 30 years. It's most annoying when the attendance is bigger and our spot has been taken. :P

I like to be able to see without other fans standing in my way. I don't like the sun in my eyes and I like my space! That's the reason I always go on the 4th bend at Brandon and why I'd hate it on the first bend where it's usually packed out.

And yes I'd never go to Poland with their flares and extrovert fans. Sad aren't I?

This one is simple for me. Wembley, yes please but not at the expense of Cardiff. Would I go to Wembley? I'm not too sure, I guess I'd have to try it the first time and the magic and romance of it all might drag me back year after year but if they did move from Cardiff to Wembley, I'd not go out of principal.

Am I saying that as I live down the road? Well no, because for a start, I did not get home and to bed until gone 2 last year on GP night by the time I got the train home and then walked from the train to home (via the curry house I'll admit). Where as a GP at Wembley and assuming it's finished by 9.30, I'd be home before 2 but thats it, over, finished, ended. Caridff on the other hand I still have another day to look forward to on the Sunday. Newport with more drinking or Newport then Swindon without the drinking.

Got to be honest, I do like the having my own place (or places, I'm greedy) and being able to speak to the same people every week and would not like to have someone different SAT next to me every week. That said, I'd love to be sat in a stadium every week with that sort of atmosphere but I'd have to go i with friends so we were sat together.

It would be great if Speedway would take place at Wembley, just great.

I have also looked at the Wembley page and it is sadly lacking speedway, just one pic, just one. How many world finals and other fine speedway meetings werent raced their. They just have wiped out the speedway on the wembley page..

It is an interesting fact that many posts on this subject feature the words 'pubs' and 'bars'. As someone who doesn't drink, i find it amazing that anyones opinion is swayed by the fact that Wembley has less drinking opportunities than Cardiff.

Just because i can't smoke inmy seat at Cardiff does not stop me going.

Do we go to Speedway watch the racing or to have a drink ?.

Yes, Cardiff has been great for the past few years but to have a G.P. held in my capital city is something i would love to see.

Something I have wondered about for several years. I mean some of the fans on here openly admit they can't remember much about the racing. Probably the same ones who are forever getting out of their seats at Cardiff and disturbing everyone else so they can go and fetch their next drink.
