Approaching Season In Poland

Recommended Posts

I would recommend a trip to Tarnow. My wife & I met up with Mike (Leliwa) last year for the Polish championship. Tarnow is a very nice city too, the town square is more laid back than other Polish cities we have been to.

I got the impression that the Tarnow fans were very knowledgeable about speedway & enjoyed (and saw) good racing.

The local beer is good too (much better than the Piast at Wroclaw).

My travelling companion HenryW appears to have similar reservations to myself about this one. Krakow really is wonderful and it's the only night of the year I will have time there, so to go to Tarnow means sacrificing a large part of potential Krakow time. Further time to consider this is definitely required.

Rico, Krakow is a great place to visit, unfortunately, it has just one little problem now ... no speedway  :P

We have visited Krakow many times in the past and love it, however we thought by trying to catch a Wanda match so early in the season that they'd surely still be open. And this year they don't open at all :D

As I said, we are still considering things, but will let you know if we do intend to come to Tarnow.

"The Wanda Affair: Part 2" - in theaters now! ;)

Wanda isn't dead yet!!! :)

GKSZ gave Krakow's promotion 'till march 3rd to pay off a 20,000PLN fine for shutting it down mid-season last year. Apparently managment is negotiating with a potential sponsor.

Got my fingers crossed for Wanda! :D

Could some explain what's happening at Gdansk?!?

To be honest, hardly anyone here understands what's going on over there in Gdansk.. I tried to follow the case but after some time I lost the point. It's a total mess. Saying very shortly - throughout recent years the club was managed by some assholes, debts were growing. Some new guys tried to sort things out but finally the main sponsor (Lotos - oil company) resigned from sponsoring as they didn't want to put their money into a sh!t. It complicated the situation very much. Gdansk didn't get the licence for riding in Ekstraliga due to their debts. Then the matter was if there were to ride in Division 1 as a club transformated in some legislative ways (hard to explain as even in Polish I rather don't get it.. ) or as a brand new club which according to the regulations has to begin in Division 2. As far as I know they will be running in Division 2 but I'm not sure as quite a long time ago I lost the point of this affair.

Anyway, I would not like to be a Gdansk fan at this time. Guys in Gdansk must be totally p!ssed off now.

To make things clear which event we're talkin about:

17th Sep - World U21 team Champ final @ Rybnik

21th Sep - Polish U21 team Champ final @ somewhere - the place of this event is always chosen later from cities of teams which have qualified into the final

This is the one I was talking about. Any chance a team within a decent distance might make/host it? 200-300 km = trainride?

To cut a long story short.

At the end of last season Gdansk owed some of the riders,Bajerski,Chrzanowski,Kosciecha among others about €21,000.It was then discovered that the top man at the club was being investigated for money laundering. The sponsors obviously didn't want to be associated with bad publicity and said they wouldn't work with him.Another club was set up to take the place of the old one,but when it was found out that money from the "top man's" wife was used to help form the new club Lotus pulled out because of the link to possible scandal. :(
