Just out of curiosity, if Robbo is now fit again why hasn't he returned to the Rockets line-up for this weekend's matches?

Enjoyed the meeting. There were some good races, but Steady was untouchable - which augurs well for the coming week. If he gates like that all week, nobodies going to get near him!!

Programme was excellent - very good features which rolled back the years, and made me feel old, as I was their in 1982 when he made his debut!!

Nice also to see some Bradford fans - I just wondered if these fans still go to speedway regularly, and if so, where, as there seemed quite a few here today.

Good day all round - well done Smudger, and here's to the next 20 years :D

The announcer said that he had a runout at Coventry last week and this was his first competitive match back. Maybe he wanted a run-out in a "friendly" before returning to full competitive action. He should be flying for the Rockets very soon. Looked sharp, and good value in his races as always.

he rode at Rye last night after the meeting to see how he felt - from his performance today I guess he feels pretty good -welcome back Robbo - one of the most exciting English riders to watch when racing from the back

Andy Smith Testimonial

A Special Day for the Connoisseur

Making our way over the hill to Manchester we inevitably ran into congested traffic through Mottram and beyond all the way to the stadium.

‘Look at all these people making their way to Andy’s testimonial meeting,’ said I.

‘They’re going to watch Man U v Arsenal,’ grinned the nephew. No doubt wishing he was heading to Old Trafford rather than to Kirkmanshulme Lane.

We’d set off for the meeting at 2pm anticipating there would be hold ups on the way with the road works over Woodhead still in place.

On arrival at the stadium it was good to see the gates already open. The weather was still looking good though it was overcast in Manchester whereas there had been hot sunshine over South Yorkshire all morning.

Making our way into the stadium we soon realised that it was likely there wouldn’t be a large crowd in attendance. Comments were made, by various people who spoke to us as to the whys and wherefores of the lack of a big turnout for this testimonial but in the end I was there to celebrate Andy Smith’s contribution to speedway. Why other people were there or not there wasn’t the issue.

It also transpired that some of the riders in the program weren’t there for one reason or another. But for those who were there this was a Special Day.

Why was it a Special Day? Because those who were there were there for a man who embodied what speedway was all about. Old School - The Real Thing - The Unsung Hero - most of us really know nothing about. The man who is always there doing his thing - A True Speedway rider - Heart and Soul – Let that Spirit Sing.

This is the man who has been forced to walk the long hard difficult road to become the rider he has become. Twenty years to walk to this testimonial. Forcing his presence onto the World Championships and Grand Prix’s stages along the way.

A Team man for 20 years, an ever present who may have turned into something of a ‘dinosaur’ in some peoples eyes. A representative of a bygone age, someone perhaps who people feel has passed his sell by date.

There were 16 riders who turned out to ride for Andy Smith from the new boy Tai Woffinden to the new double world champion Jason Crump. I hope each of them saw it has a privilege to be here on the day. It was a special day for all of them. There was nowhere else I would have been today than at Kirksmanhulme Lane

Like the man the Official Souvenir Programme is First Class. The racing was decent too and the best man won on the day. It would have been great to see Andy race. I do hope this day was everything Andy wanted it to be.

‘There were giants’, it has been said, ‘in those days and we might never see their like again’. Andy Smith was and is one of those giants and he still stands astride the stage and long may he continue to do so.

A Special Day

Maybe the same reason that Billy Hamill missed an Oxford meeting last season while he rode in Wolverhampton's Olympique: To test his fitness!!

Yeah, it was a decent meeting and a good afternoon. Pleased for Andy :)

Crumpy rode at 60%, which kept the meeting fair :P and I'm guessing Steady was trying something new with his bikes - it certainly worked, whatever it was.

Great to see Robbo riding again.

Nice to see Olly scoring well away from Brandon, it's been a while ! :P

Congratulations to today's organizers.

anyone have pictures from the meeting?

I haven't, Azhdy, but I can offer you this extract from todays Manchester Evening News:

Aces' star Simon Stead showed he was in the mood for the final crunch by winning the Andy Smith Testimonial meeting at Kirkmanshulme Lane last night.

Stead won his five qualifying rides and then stormed to victory in the final ahead of teammate and World champion Jason Crump, Aussie Travis McGowan, and Mark Loram, the 2000 World champion.

Smith, who started his career at Belle Vue in 1982, said: "I was happy with the way the meeting went and with the attendance.

"When we picked this date way back at the start of the season there was nothing much else happening but, by the time we got here, there were all sorts of sporting events going on.

"Consequently, I was very happy with the turn-out. It made a lot of hard work worth the effort."

I think Steve Dixon or another guy may have some pics. Leave with me and I'll try to dig out their addresses.

OK Azhdy, try these two adresses:

www.mike-patrick.com

Both Steve and Mike are regular pic men at Kirky Lane so one of them should be putting some online shortly, if not already there.

Azhdy - Steve's right, Ian Charles is the other guy. NOT Mike Patrick.

Steve - Thanks for the correction, me old mate, hope all is well with you.

Haven't seen much from you lately. Of course it could be that my two remaining LGCs are letting me down - again. I take it you are still 'flashing' here and there :)
