Sandie
Brilliant news. We heard this at the track this afternoon, apparently he called the office to let Colin know (aah - sweet!!). It must be blooming late in Australia but their meetings dont often finish till midnight gone. Hopefully we will get scores later once people have had a chance to get a kip. Well done Rory. The start of new beginnings

Guest Sir Lunchalot
A quick report now and I'll edit it later to add more detail 1st Schlein 2nd Doolan 3rd Gathercole 4th Lyons (slowed on lap 4 while dicing for second) Doolan qualified first on 14 points with the other three on 12. Unlucky rider of the night was Mathew Wethers who scored 12 but missed out on the final on a countback. Jason Lyons replaced Shane Parker, Cameron Woodward replaced by Hayden Redding in the advertised line up.
Guest Sir Lunchalot
On what was an unseasonally cool night accompanied by a cold blustery wind it wasn't the best weather to attract fans for a night out. The organisers would have been disappointed with the crowd which I estimate would have been half (or less) than the crowd at the Shane Parker meeting two weeks earlier. Perhaps one week prior to Christmas with potentially lots of other things on and a meeting on only two weeks ago on isn't super timing either. I can see some leave passes having been used up two weeks back and no 'special dispensation" being given this close to Christmas. I don't know why Shane Parker or Cameron Woodward did not ride but in the program they thanked Jason Lyons who substituted for Shane after he withdrew from the meeting on Wednesday. The field was weakened overall by Woodwards withdrawl though. It was a strange meeting as in quite a few heats one rider cleared out in front but behind there were some terrific tussles for the minor placings. Matthew Wethers was unlucky not to qualify for the final and I can't remember too many times where a rider has scored 12 and not been in the top 4. I think it merely highlighted the gap in quality between the top 6 or 7 and the rest of the field. Scoring K Doolan 2,3,3,3,3 = 14 J Lyons 3,3,3,3,Excl = 12 R Schlein 3,3,1,3,2 = 12 C Gathercole 3,2,1,3,3 = 12 M Wethers 2,2,3,2,3 = 12 R Ksiezak 1,3,2,2,3 = 11 T Harding 2,2,2,2,2 = 10 A Summers 3,1,0,2,2 = 8 T Proctor 1,0,3,1,1 = 6 C Ferguson 1,1,2,1,1 = 6 Matt Jones 2,2,0,0,1 = 5 S James 1,0,1,1,2 = 5 A Bugeja 0,1,2,1,- = 4 D Harding 0,1,0,0,1 = 2 H Redding 0,0,1,-,- = 1 H Sandford 0,0,0,-,0 = 0 H Liersch (res) 0,0 = 0 C Gittus (res) 0,0 = 0 Heat 1 Schlein, T Harding, James, Redding James in red gated well and held the lead for the first lap. It was only a matter of time though before Schlein got by and Harding followed suit later on. Redding was off the pace. Heat 2 Lyons, Wethers, Ferguson, Bugeja (ret) Lyons from gate 2 had his gating head on in this one and rocketed away from the tapes. Wethers from his inside had no answer and seemed content to pick up an easy two points to start his night. Heat 3 Gathercole, Doolan, Ksiezak, D Harding Gathercole can be very good when he sets his mind to it and this was one of those ocassions. Doolan in white couldn't make much impression from the tapes and found himself in third heading down the back straight the first time but soon got by Ksiezak to take second. Gathercole was well away by that stage and Doolan was never going to catch him. Heat 4 Summers, Jones, Proctor, Sandford. Where did Summers come from !! No name riders in this heat and as they lined up perhaps Proctor was the nominal favourite. Summers had other ideas and from the extreme outside held his nerve well to keep the power on and sail right round the outside from the start to grab the lead by the back straight. He then rode with his head for 4 laps to take a nice win. Surprisngly Proctor could make no inroads on Jones who was having his first ride for 5 weeks after injuring his tailbone in early November. Heat 5 Doolan, Wethers, Summers, James A far better start from Doolan this time from up against the fence and he narrowly headed Wethers on settling. Nothing between the two of them all race as Wethers was continually looking for ways to challenge Doolan ..... but all to no avail. Heat 6 Schlein, Gathercole, Ferguson, Sandford. A heat rerun after an unsatisfactory start first time around. Gathercole gated superbly in blue in the rerun and held off Schlein for the best part of two laps and an upset was on the cards. It was not to be though as Schlein made a superb outside move heading into turn 3 on lap two to claim the lead. He went into the turn very fast and I actually muttered to the bloke next to me "surely he can't go that fast and that wide and still get round" as Schlein set himself up for the pass. Terrific move that Gathercole simply had no answer for. Heat 7 Lyons, Jones, D Harding, Redding (ret) Jones was actually ahead for about 40 yards from the off until Lyons powered round the outside. Lyons soon cleared off and left Jones being pestered by the younger Harding for the rest of the race. Jones held on for second in what was Hardings best ride of the night. Heat 8 Ksiezak, T Harding, Bugeja, Proctor. A very close first lap between all 4 riders with perhaps Harding narrowly with his nose in front. Ksiezak soon assumed control though and scored a good win. At the back it was hard fought with Proctor not doing as well as I thought he might in both his first two efforts. Heat 9 Proctor, Ferguson, James, D Harding Much better from Proctor this time. Actually two races in one with Ferguson putting Proctor under pressure all race and James and Harding both hard at it a little way behind. Heat 10 Wethers, Ksiezak, Schlein, Jones All four gated really well and Schlein from gate 4 was looking for room to cut across in front of the field but there was none there and he was forced to take a wide line into turn 1 which robbed him of lots or momentum and he found himself in last place. He soon accounted for Jones but Wethers and Ksiezak had grabbed a handy break on the defending champion. Great tussle between the first two with the leading Wethers holding on and emerging victoious. Heat 11 Doolan, Bugeja, Redding, Sandford (f excl) In a word ... boring. Doolan first, daylight (or should that be nightime ?) second. Heat 12 Lyons, T Harding, Gathercole, Summers Great 1st bend round the outside from Lyons out of gate 4 to grab the lead. Harding got out of gate 2 well leaving Gathercole squeezed out of proceedings and back in third. Try as Gathercole could Harding had all the answers to claim second with Lyons long gone out front. Heat 13 Lyons, Ksiezak, James, Gittus (res), Sandford (dns) Lyons was proving great value and a more than adequate replacement for Shane Parker. Easy for him again with James having a bit of a heart stopping moment on the pit bend on lap three but staying upright and picking up the odd point. Good to see Carly Gittus from WA having a ride as a reserve, she wasn't on the pace but I bet she was thrilled to be out there and savouring the moment. Heat 14 Schlein, Summers, Bugeja, D Harding Watch them gate, write placings in program by turn 2 lap 1, put program down, go buy a jumbo sausage (with onion & sauce) and a beer. Heat 15 Gathercole, Wethers, Proctor, Liersch (res), Redding (dns) Great entertainment this one. Proctor in red gated in first but Gathercole went very hard but very fairly under him going into turn three first time around. Wethers also got by Proctor on lap 2 and closed in on Gathercole on laps 3 and 4 but he ran out of laps in which to try anything. Proctor would have been disappoined to let both of them past. Heat 16 Doolan, T Harding, Ferguson, Jones Bye Kev !! He was totally dominant and won it by the length of the straight. Another second for the elder Harding. He was beating everyone he should but not quite troubling the front runners. Heat 17 Gathercole, James, Jones, Liersch (res), Bugeja (dns) Gethercole from the extreme outside knew that nothing less than a win was required if he was to have a chance of making the final. After a terrific outside line on lap 1 he settled down to ride away from the field. Consistency can be Gathercole's downfall but tonight was a good solid even performance from him that he can take heart from. Heat 18 (rerun) Doolan, Schlein, Proctor, Lyons (excl) A rerun heat. First time of asking Doolan from the inside got a superb jump and led Schlein in second and Lyons in third going round the first bend. Lyons was trying to go round the outside of Schlein but it turn two both came to grief and hit the ground. From my vantage point near the start I wasn't exactly sure what happened as Proctor was blocking my view and it was a bad angle but my reading of it was Lyons either just lightly clipped Schlein or moved in on him causing him to fall. I'm quite prepared to be told I'm wrong by anyone who was sitting on the banking near turn 2 as they would have had a far better view than I did. Lyons didn't take his place in the rerun. In the rerun Doolan again had a superb start to push Schlein back to second. Heat 19 Ksiezak, Summers, Ferguson, Gittus (res), Redding (dns) Not much interest in this heat. Ksiezak was the clear favourite and it was a routine ride for him. Heat 20 Wethers, T Harding, D Harding, Sandford Another heat with most of the interest gone out of it. Wethers continued his good form with an easy win but he would have known by then he wouldn't make the final. Final Schlein (B.), Doolan ®, Gathercole (W), Lyons (Y/B) What Doolan would have given for one of his starts from heat 18 !! He had the choice of gates but Schlein was brilliant when the tapes rose and led by a couple of bike lengths by the first turn. Doolan and Lyons had a ding dong battle for second before Lyons slowed on lap 4 allowing Gathercole up one place. Doolan was giving it everything he had and you could see the effort he was puttng in as he wrestled with the handlebars round some of the turns. Schlein for the third year in a row was just too good when it mattered though. In the support solos visiting British rider Dan Warwick was head and shoulders above the other three (Harley Liersch, Carly Gittus and Jess Lamb). This was highlighted in their last ride when Warwick must have been daydreaming at the tapes as when they rose he didn't move. He finally got going as the other three were already in turn one but by the end of lap two he had caught and passed all three. At the conclusion of the heat the gent I was with uttered a famous Australian one word expression that roughly translates to "Wow". He was right, it looked that good. Warwick would have been far better off in the main field but as he is a visitor and wasn't even originally programmed to ride then I can see why he was in the support class. The sidecars was super competitive with Treloar/Plaisted winning the final followed by Howse/Commons, Plaisted/Harrison & Irwin/Sherwood but not before they had been given some decent old "hurry up" in the heats and the final. Thanks for your run down on the meeting Luchy This was posted on the Monarchs Chatzone re Shane's withdrawal: Story taken from the Gillman Speedway site today Parker Out Lyons In !! In a shock decision, Shane Parker has pulled out of this Saturday night's South Australian Solo Championship. After running and competing in his testimonial meeting a fortnight ago, he has decided not to compete as he said that he is mentally drained and not in the right frame of mind to compete. As for Cameron his Scottish landlord posted that Cameron had a big toe injury.
Guest Sir Lunchalot
Lunchy Was Mr Williams doing any announcing at the meeting tonight? VV <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No, Bryn wasn't at Gillman. He must have got some inside information on the weather and he had scarpered up to North Queensland and was commentating up there at Pioneer Park in Ayr at the the two day meeting where Todd Wiltshire was doing so well. chopper
Yes it was a cold night, some good racing though.Thought Aaron Summers has improved a lot since the last night i was there.Still not sure if i agree with the one off final race(although it may have helped me when i rode, with two thirds and two fourths), especially if its a proper 20 heats where everyone races each other once. As for the crowd, they might want to review there prices 15 dollars for over 12 yrs old is getting near speedway park prices.
