Broadford 11th December

Apologies for the lateness of this but here is a round up of Broadford on Sunday. Too much else on is my excuse.

It was a lovely fine summers day but fairly warm which meant the water tanker driver did more laps than anyone else trying to keep the dust down. Towards the end the heat took its toll with a few mechanical gremlins creeping in not to mention some very tired looking competitors. The highlight was the entry list, I have never seen the pits that full for an ordinary club day. 15 over 30 solos, 13 sidecars, and 12 senior solos took to the track plus the 250 sidecars, classic solos, and classic sidecars in a bumper days racing.

One name dominated the solos - Mark Jones. Great to see him back in the saddle and he was very good indeed. His first ride was one of those "sneaky quick" ones where it looked easy but you just knew it was a fast one by the way he cleared out. No one could get near him all day. English visitor Daniel Warwick had another good meeting but Tyron Proctor had an unusually quiet day for him. Perhaps all the miles he has clocked up racing recently is catching up with him and the Christmas break is coming at exactly the right time for him. Corey Gathercole finished further down the results than he would have hoped courtesy of a DNS when he had bike failure just prior to lining up for his first ride. Jake Anderson in his first year up from juniors is still finding his feet in senior company but is improving with each ride and he scored a nice morale boosting win in his third outing. Jessica Lamb had a day she would probably rather forget.

Solo Results

Mark Jones 3,3,3,3 = 12

Daniel Warwick 3,3,2,3 = 11

Corey Gathercole Dns,3,2,3 = 8

Corey Dore 3,2,1,2 = 8

Karlis Ezergarlis Dns,2,3,2 = 7

Jake Anderson 1,1,3,2 = 7

Sam Dore 2,2,0,1 = 5

Tyron Proctor 2,1,1,1 = 5

James Godden 1,1,2,1 = 5

Quentin Byrne 2,0,0,0 = 2

Jessica Lamb 0,0,1,0 = 1

Paul Bogdanowicz - did not ride

Sidecar honours were shared between Noel Gawne/Craig Fordham and Malcolm German/Nathan Chisholm with three wins and one second each and both finishing on 11 points, followed by Andrew German/Nathan Chisholm and Warren Monson/Scott Cameron both on 10 points. Special mention of Nathan Chisholm as he was doubling up as a passenger for both the German brothers Malcolm and Andrew. He would have slept well that night.

Amusing moment of the day award went to visiting Tasmanian sidecar outfit of Chapman/Beattie who exited the track and went infield on turn 4 only to discover that there is a small underground spring 15 metres or so from the track which left the area soggy after very heavy rain early in the week and which they soon found stops bikes really quick. It only took about 6 people to manhandle / push the bike out of the mud !! I'm sure they laughed later on even though they probably didn't

find it funny at the time. Special mention also to Matt Newton King whos first two rides featured two absolutely blinding starts .... his only problems being taking a short cut on the way to turn one via the infield the first time and being excluded, and being called back for moving at the start the second. I can't imagine him being overly thrilled about things as he lined up for the rerun.

Classic sidecars again featured more wheel to wheel racing between Ken Walker/Maree Chapman and Dave Cottrell/Peter Vipond with Cottrell/Vipond narrowly taking the overall honours. The times might not be as fast as some of the other classes but I would defy anyone to find any more consistently exciting, close, clean racing than these two outfits put on month after month. Wonderful stuff.

Classic Solos also had its moments with a strange three rider heat involving Alan Landers falling while in first and remounting at the back, then Gordon Young who had inherited the lead pulling up with mechanical failure, then a fast finishing Landers grabbing the win close to the line from Brett Smiley.

All in all a bl**dy good day !!

What nightmares did Jess have then Lunchy  ??

Well done to Mark on his max --- thoroughly deserved.

No real nightmares For Jessica Main Man, just a combination of a really hot energy sapping day that she probably wouldn't have been used to, riding on borrowed machinery, having to continually keep swatting about 1,000,000 flies off every 30 seconds, and not getting better scores wouldn't have made it a meeting she would really want to remember ..... unless it was for the charming gent who introduced himself to her at the BBQ :D

And yes Marks maximum was very well deserved.

Might have also been to do with the fact I never raced the other competitors of my standard when Dan got them all day. It wasnt programmed so that everyone raced everyone. I ended up with Corey Gathercole couple times and the Dores twice and Mark Jones, Ty Proctor etc and never even raced Quentin Byrnes and Paul B wasnt there and I beat them both easy last meeting there

It is hard to race someone elses bike but Karlis has been great letting me do that, saving me a 20hour round trip. Getting on the plane is much easier.

Actually Main Man, Ive heard someone with louder snoring now!! I stayed at Matt Jones House and his dad kept me awake from another bedroom - thats my other excuse for not being on the pace sunday!! :P

Catch you at Gillman then Launchy, nice meeting you Sunday :D

Never thought of that Jess !!

With 4 rides and 11 other riders even if you did meet everyone else once you would have had to double up against one other rider twice.

The riders you got twice were James Godden, Corey Gathercole (who would have been raring to go after his Dns in his 1st race when you first met), and Corey Dore who was riding well too.

You missed out on Dan and Karlis. Perhaps they didn't want to risk you beating the guy lending you a bike !! Everyone else you raced against once. You actually did meet Quentin Byrne in heat 2.

Likewise nice meeting you. I'll be at Gillman but I don't usually stand near the pits as you get a far better view from on the banking on turn 2 or down the home straight. I usually get between the start line and turn 1. I'll look out for you at interval when I wander around to the food & drink stalls near the pits for a jumbo sausage (with onions) :D and a beer !!

He is back Ozy .... he was at Broadford but not riding on Sunday. He probably isn't fully race fit yet after damaging his tailbone (ouch !!) at Myrtleford.

Yes like has been said Matt got back last Thursday and was very kind to put me up for the weekend and take me to Broadford. He nearly was going to have a practice to see how his back is but thought it best to leave it another week before the South Aussie title meeting. He tested it out with some roller blading down the beach front and luckily stayed upright ;)
