Paris, Monaco Etc

Monaco? At the football stadium, presumably. Darn near impossible, I would have thought - the costs would be totally exorbitant.

I can't remember the location Andy, but I do seem to remember talk of an underground car park nearby.

Why would the costs of staging the meeting at the football stadium be exorbitant anyway - surely it wouldn't cost any more than Cardiff or Copenhagen to stage it there?

The cost of everything in Monaco tends to be extortionate!

I seem to recall that the underground car park was exactly the problem.

It was the football stadium that they were considering, and Prince Albert was on board after visiting the first staging of the Cardiff GP, but the pitch at the stadium couldn't take the weight of a track being laid on it because of the way it is constructed with a car park underneath it.

Or at least, that's the way I remember it.

It seems far more sensible to take the series into Nations that already have a good speedway base. Latvia is a good start...hopefully Russia next!

HenryWs post is spot on, from what I can remember.

There was a meeting in Le Stade de Frace circa November 2002. Paul Hurry (I think) rode in it. I was a watching the Race of Champions on Eurosport the other day from there, they already had the ideal speedway track in there, they only had to remove the chicanes.

Le Stade de France is crying out for a GP I reckon. They already host motorsport so as far as organisation is concerned it's not like it's anything new to them to have a track in there. Easy transport links from all over Europe and smack bang in the middle of a capital city for fans to visit. I know it's not that simplistic obviously, but outside of the established speedway nations, it's the one that shouts out loudest to me at least.

I believe there is a car park underneath, but it sounds like a load of cobblers to me. The problem with staging a GP anywhere, is finding a mug to pay the staging fee and assume the financial risk. The Monaco royal family is not known for its charity, and is unlikely to back what would almost certainly be a loss-making event.

Absolutely. Although Daugavpils is not exactly the most accessible place in the world, at least it does seem to have a speedway club in the ascendancy. I'd imagine the GP there will draw as many fans as Monaco would.

Have to agree with you there. How much does a speedway track weigh considering it is spread out around the pitch.Add a few tractors, etc
