Recently I read an article in Tygodnik Zuzlowy (Polish Speedway Star-if you will) about a group of former speedway riders from Britain building two tracks in Spain, mainly for spring trainig purposes. Unfortunately I misplaced the article. Anyone have more info the topic?Thnx.

Take a look at the speedway-plus site. There's a lot there about this proposed project which still has to get started.

Just what I was saying the other day ...

I'd move there - if there was speedway...

Was in a (respectable) Bikers Bar in Artes - where they only knew of "moto"

But now I'm thinking there is possibly a very willing audience just waiting for Speedway in Spain.

Every reason for this project to succeed :approve:

Not based on the at least 10 past efforts to start speeday in Spain since the 1930s. I am very sceptical about the whole things - sadly.

Don't know if you know Russ but if I had too name 1 person who could make this work Russ would definetly be top of my list, his enthusiam along with all the time, money and effort spent on this project should,i pray, see him make it a success. I don't know what the other failed projects were like but Russ has got that much equipment, what are going to be excellent facilities and also a mass of speedway knowledge that will hopefully see him through  This has been a massive project that i would imagine is totally uncompareable to other projects that have failed.

Possibly not, Julie. A number of former riders and others have tried to introduce speedway to Spain over quite a number of years but have always failed in spite of their best efforts. I would like to see the latest attempt succeed. Even so I doubt that we would see a GP there in the forseeable future.

BTW: PM in your inbox!

Stay well, stay happy

Ron.

Well at least it would cut down on the chance of rain-offs :)

Thanks for the PM

Speedway in Spain goes back originally to the 1930s. At one time, they even sent riders to race in England - a Spanish team raced at Wembley around this time. Madrid was a main centre and the Spanish riders also used to compete against riders from the UK. Cliff Parkinson was a regular there at one time.

The Civil War from 1936 to 1939 ended all sports. Since around 1947, there have been many promotional ventures - some by local promoters, others by groups from England. In the mid-1980s Wally Mawdsely ran a track in Madrid where Alan Mogridge was one of his riders. This failed, as did an attempt by Ian Hoskins in the early 1970s to promote in Majorca. The list of failed attempts could go on.

The Spanish people seemingly do not like speedway. I fear that it does matter how much equipment is imported there, or what riders go there, after its initial appeal speedway will struggle to survive.

i heard the only reason previous attempts had failed, was only down to the fact they don't like spending money. They were all fine with riding borrowed gear, but didn't want to actually pay out the cost for their own. I only hope things have changed.

This is a new reason to me for speedway failing to succeed in Spain. Mostly meetings in post-war years have featured touring British riders. The last all-Spanish attempt to promote speedway in Spain was about 1948 in Madrid - Spanish riders on Spanish-owned bikes. The same applied in pre-war days. Your reasoning is just a myth. Apart from Ian Hoskins' attempt in Majorca in 1971 to promote Spanish speedway, I don't think they have taken an active interest as competitors for more than 50 years. My belief is that it will stay that way. Good class early 1930s Spanish riders included Poto Primo and Poto Segundo (with their own bikes!!). They may have been in the Spanish team at Wembley in early 1930s. The only other Spanish rider in more modern times is Alberto Sirvan who rode in France in the 1950s.

OLYMPIC STADIUM BARCELONA

Home of Espanyol FC who use the stadium from August to May and otherwise is left empty.

This I believe has been looked at to hold the European GP in 2007.
