North Queensland V South Queensland

Recommended Posts

This week will see the first two meetings in the North v South Queensland series.

The first meeting is at Pioneer Park on Friday night (9th Sep) with meeting number two taking place the following night.

Following on from the successful New South Wales tour these meetings look like being just as exciting with strong lineups for both teams.

I'm particularly looking forward to seeing NSW youngster Chris Holder again, Chris is guesting for North QLD with his Brother James in the Southern side.

Chris's clashes with the likes of Scott Smith on the super fast Pioneer Park circuit should be a treat.

The Junior matches also look interesting with Australian number two Darcy Ward taking it to the locals who include the Queensland number one and two in their side.

The first of two consecutive solo State Challenge matches was held at Pioneer Park in North Queensland last night.

The two teams dubbed the North Queensland Rhinos and the South Queensland Solo Stars competed in some very close Junior and Senior competition with the senior Southern Side just winning the opener after the locals took it to the wire.

The action got underway with a shared heat with Scott Smith looking lightning quick out in front, his partner James Holder was not so lucky blowing his engine, but the meeting really hotted up in the following race when Dave Booth led Australian Under 21 Champion Chris Holder until the very last turn, Holder timed his move to perfection sneaking under Booth to take the victory.

In heat three Scott McKenna was excluded after ploughing through the tapes whilst John Oliver showed no ill effects of the very nasty eye injury he suffered recently, making a winning return.

There was never more than a couple of points overall until the locals were hit with a 5-0 in heat 9, first time out Jeremy Linton took a very heavy fall on the back straight, Linton careered into the concrete at high speed, and after a very worrying few minutes was helped to his feet suffering concussion and a very battered motorcycle, Linton took no further part in the meeting, in the re run local youngster Scott Mckenna also wobbled to a halt leaving the visitors to take full advantage giving them a seven point lead the largest of the night..

The Rhinos weren’t finished though, taking advantage of rider replacements for the unlucky Linton. The teenage partnership of Chris Holder and Ricky Barney took maximum points for the second time in heat 11 and with four races to go the match hung in the balance.

The final race saw the visiting team holding a narrow three point lead, this proved enough despite another impressive victory by Holder, his partner and team captain Roy Stout was unable to help coming to a halt whilst trailing Smith and Booth.

The Junior challenge was a keenly contested affair with Australian number two Darcy Ward keeping the visitors within striking distance until the final few heats. Ward was beaten twice on the night by Queensland Champion and local captain Josh Grajczonek, but the locals strength in depth was the major factor in what turned out to be a comfortable victory in the end.

Same place same riders and very similar results to the previous nights meeting in the second solo teams challenge at Pioneer Park.

There really was nothing between the two sides.

Once again Scott Smith started off with a win and with his partner James Holder following home the visitors took the early lead. Then followed a succession of shared heats until the brilliant Chris Holder led his team mate Ricky Barney over the line to even the score in heat five.

The Southerners hit straight back with another Smith/J Holder maximum in heat six but there was no opportunity for the visitors to pull away with

the dominant Chris Holder being used to good effect.

There was never more than five points separating the two teams and that margin would have been even less if it hadn’t been for an unlucky heat nine for the home side, both home riders failed to finish the race, with the unlucky Jeremy Linton touching the tapes first then his partner local teenager Scott McKenna taking a fall on the pits bend during the re run, the race was awarded.

With two races remaining only one point seperated the two sides with the visitors leading 39-38 but it was all decided in the penultimate heat after Scott Smith came from behind to beat local youngster Ricky Barney, Barney did separate Smith and his partner James Holder but the 4-2 gave South Queensland a winning cushion going into the final race.

New South Wales hot shot Chris Holder again finished the night unbeaten, he was a class above this field and showed his undoubted ability again after the teams meeting, taking out a series of one lap dashes winning all four starts ahead of Dave Booth, Scott Smith and Ricky Barney.

In the Junior event the local kids were in fine form and took a comprehensive overall victory despite a top showing by Darcy Ward. Despite the score the racing was close and the visitors can be proud of their efforts. The Junior scene in the North of Queensland is really booming right now and competition like this will help move things along even further.

Rounds three and four were held in South East Queensland on the weekend.

Round three was held at the North Brisbane venue on Friday night where the North Queensland Juniors continued there dominance with a comprehensive 62-28 Victory.

In the main event North QLD pushed all the way and were ahead three quarters of the way through the meeting, eventually loosing by just a few points.

Standout riders were Scott Smith and Dave Booth for SQ and the ever improving Ricky Barney and guest rider (from NSW) Korey Williams for the North.

Round four was held the following night at the Mike Hatcher Park venue on the Gold Coast, again the Northern Juniors won reasonably easily however the scoreline was closer.

The main event went SQ's way, with a 20 point margin going the way of the home team.

Again Smith and Booth stood out for the victors with Korey Williams and to a lesser extent Barney offering the only resistance for the visitors.

Guest Sir Lunchalot

.... and modesty forbids WWTBP from mentioning that last weekend WWTBP junior scored 13 + 1 from five rides while rding for the dominant NQ junior Rhino's vs the SQ junior Stars.

Well done that young man :)

I was very tempted last weekend to head up north for the two Brisbane / Gold Coast meetings but there were several factors that combined to conspire against me so it didn't happen. I really would have liked to go as I believe the racing was excellent. I usually travel to the Oz titles, the Oz U21's and the SA titles and with the Vic meetings added in that doesn't leave many free weekends that don't clash so I missed a golden opportunity. Perhaps when it's cold down south next June / July I'll have to appoint myself Peter White's errand boy and head up your way for the rematch of the NSW/Qld clash that I hear was so good earlier this year.

Having said that I'm hugely excited and can't wait for the weekends NSW/Vic teams clash. With the Jones boys / Proctor / Gathercole / Ezergailis in the Vic team and Ty Platt / Slades / Hernes in the NSW side I reckon it's going to be an absolute belter. Shame in a way they didn't see fit to run a teams event instead of an individual event on Sunday too, that would have been the icing on the cake for me.

Shame you couldn't make it Lunchy, several people I spoke to said the North Brizzzy round was the best racing they'd ever seen at that particular venue. The Junior concept worked a treat too, with good feedback....got to be better than watching the tractor go round hasn't it?

June/July is the perfect time to travel up to NQ, old Whitey's got it sussed, perfect weather and very little chance of a rainoff.

Yes its a shame you couldn't get a second teams meeting on the Sunday, its a fair distance for the NSW boys to travel for one meeting....A very good lineup too...
