f-s-p
Third round of the finnish series was cancelled a week ago, because the organizers were unable to find a required doctor to cover the meeting. Common opinion here in Finland is that this was a lame excuse, and the real reasons for it might remain unknown forever. The club that was supposed to organize the meeting doesn't have the best recent history in finnish speedway, they've pulled out at the last minute from every competiteve level of finnish league speedway in the past five different years. The round has now been given to the Pori club, and will be held 10th of September. In a 1st division meeting a month ago the Pori club in association with some veteran motorcyclists made a bit of a history, when more than 1000 fans saw the meeting at Yyteri. Last years Individual final at Seinäjoki was witnessed by 550 people, and the same amount of public saw the Scandinavian final three weeks ago at the same track. Finnish track racing committee had decided in it's meeting held 6th of August, that it would be best for finnish speedway to track a team in next years SWC. This decision was then handed forward to the higher echelons in the finnish union, the SML. It was their decision NOT TO APPLY FOR A TEAM PLACE IN THE SWC, because there's no chance of going trough the first qualifier. Similar decision to overrule a track racing committee's decision late last year led to the resignation of Matti Pöysä from the committee. Calendar proposed for approval was changed dramatically, and Pöysä decided it was enough. He has since become a certified FIM referee, and later he was approved by the governing Russian body to be a ref in their meetings. So in these times when we have... - for the first time A MEDAL coming from the longtrack GP series! - last year we had a GP rider! - last year a rider in the TOP6 in the U16 Euro Champs! - this year 3 riders in the Swedish U16 league, top of the averages I might add! - A finalist in the U16 World's! - 2 riders in the Swedish Elitserien and 4 in Allsvenskan! - 1 in Elitleague and 1 in Premiere ready to step up! ...the men in charge decide there's no point in participating! TwoMinuteWarning
Sounds like a purely financial decision. With that sort of encouragement from the ruling body, I'm surprised you still have some young speedway riders! If they won't take part in competitions they are unlikely to win, how will they ever improve? A sad situation. tarabanko
Really bad for finnish speedway. Sad to read. But as Brian Collins is writing it is maybe all upon money. However if its money or not it is a strange decision.
f-s-p
EDIT: I really need to keep this computer shut saturday nights... Jari Mäkinen has made it in to the final at Rybnik in the Euros, so one more achievement is on it's way! f-s-p
Apparently after some talks between Harri Heikkilä from the track racing committee and Reijo Kivelä from the SML in yesterdays Long Track Championships (won by Jari Ahlbom before Janne Koivula) the previous decision not to enter the SWC next has been withdrawn, and a finnish team will be entered in to the competition next year. Jari Mäkinen was 14th in the U16 Euros at Rybnik today. Well done!
