Jumping The Start

Recommended Posts

Well, a couple of times tonight riders tried to jump the start and the races were allowed to continue. I thought Nicki P jumped the start in his fateful heat with TG. And then TR tried to jump the start once.

Famously, of course, Lindback has made a reputation of trying to jump the starts in the GPs and last week's SWC.

Why are referees not clamping down on it?

Have to say I agree with this, riders seem to be getting away with it more and more, and therefore keep doing it! Not often applicable in league racing, mostly in international meetings.

Still, was it Keith Huewen saying how bad refereeing is becoming of late? Perhaps someone will take notice as the problem has been brought into the global spotlight.

I've always felt that is you don't touch the tapes and get a flier then good for you. Also, if you make a mess of it and find yourself at the back then tough.

Let the races continue.

I agree Grachan. If a rider is brave/confident enough to take a flier then fair play if they get it right, chances are if they get it wrong they will be excluded for tape touching, or at the very least they will completely miss the start due to having to pull the bike back as the tapes go up. It also annoys me that a lot of refs stop the race immediately if someone does move at the start, why not let it go round the first turn and then see if anyone gets an unfair advantage?

Over the last few years the riders been allowed to leave a larger gap between the front wheel and the tapes. Thus we've seen many riders roll back slightly and then creep forward when under the green light, and even some having to physically hold the bike back when they creep too far. If they insisted on the front wheel being as close as possible to the tapes without touching them - and remaining there until they go up - the riders would have to be stationary until the tapes went up and we'd see fairer starts.

woooo!!

ric flair sure as hell agrees.

Referees all too often miss rolling at the starts, maybe if it is allowed riders will only be excluded for actually touching the tapes!!

In the GP, EL, PL and I bet even CL racing, you get people jumping the starts all the time. In many I have seen, this has been a bad move. What I want to say, is I think it was the SWC, I think it was Lindback!? Anyways, he set off far too early, sent the tapes in front of him, but seeing as he didn't break the tapes, the ref let the race continue. How stupid is that!? As it happens, I don't thnk he won the race, but surely the ref should have excluded Lindback(correct me if I'm wrong, btw!)or sent him off 15 metres. If they'e gonna enforce rules, are they gonna stick to them, or just exclude who they want when they want(Like the GP on Saturday, to quote Nicki P..."Well, I know you're Polish and everything...." ). Surely, if they're going to be harsh on exclusions etc, they should be the same on every rider!
