richard
3yrs since the last one, does anyone think it as a chance of being put back in the series, i hope so, i think its only fair for the aussies, they have plenty of good riders and their own people do not get to see them. surely there must be people in oz that can get it going again. does not seem right without one, when you look at the amount of australian riders around, anyone agree... cappy
We're hoping to emmigrate to OZ in the next 2 years (visa application takes ages) and I was looking to see how popular speedway is over there. We're moving to Perth and it certianly doesn't appear to be popular around there (Western Australia), so maybe there's not enough demand to get a GP? BritPete
The GP in Australia was a financial disaster, the track was very poor and the crowd very sparse. I think it will be a long time, if ever, before we see another one.

Guest Sir Lunchalot
The GP in Australia was a financial disaster, the track was very poor and the crowd very sparse. I think it will be a long time, if ever, before we see another one. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The event certainly was a financial disaster though, hearsay has it that the promoter budgeted to lose A$ 500,000 but ended up losing getting on towards double that. He got caught with unexpected expenditure such as a penalty for not getting the track up on schedule after the event, a penalty for damage to the infield, and having to dig a bit deeper into his pockets than intended for the FIM party and entourage. The crowd was good I though, advertised as 32,000 (although I thought it was less than that) but it wasn't all that bad a crowd. It may have looked sparse because the stadium holds something like 60,000. One thing that may have cost a few walk up spectators was the weather, for late spring it was a bitterly cold and windy day as those who were there will well remember. We can but live in hope out here but we are not holding our breath.

Hopefully Pawprint will join me again. Are you coming as well Tigerblade?
spiderweb
30,000 for an Aussie meeting was good I dont know crowd figures for a normal Grand Prix over in europe . The costs involved in getting everyone and bikes ect would be huge. I get the feeling it will be a long time before any promoter will stick his/her neck out again. The only way to justify it would to be have two rounds maybe New Zeland as well but its not going to happen for a while. PS bikes in Perth are in a slump lack of places to ride but eastern states are holding there own. Side cars seem to be hot. BritPete
Watching the meeting on TV, I can only say the crowd DID look sparse, and I would be very surprised if the figures quoted on here are accurate!

(sorry but being SOR I didn't realise NOR existed.. ) Edited August 18, 2005 by WATigerman
aussiegal
Hey WATigerman, The new track is just north of Wanneroo, near the Motor X circuit I think, mainly a training track but hoping for some senior riders this summer, maybe Ozyace can confirm?? Are they having bikes at Kwinana this season, do you know? if so will be making the long trek down there.
Stats
New track is situated in Pederick Road, Neerabup alongside the Wanneroo Junior Motorcross circuit. It's only 140 metres in length and was built for the Junior Solos (Under 16s). However it has been/is about to be licensed for Senior Solos and several meetings will be staged there this summer. It is the only bright light on the WA bike scene at the present time.
Gemini
Hopefully Pawprint will join me again. She sure will. Just say the word and I'll pack her bags. Don't suppose you could manage two of them could you? Is the bag big enough?
Joanne
Now I understand Gemini. My white helmet explainer has just told me you have another dog
Squirelnutkins
Doubt the Australian GP will be back in Speedway. It is too far for fans to travel. Crowd was very poor when they held it.
salty
The crowd figure was widely reported as 32,000 which I wouldn't describe as poor. Would imagine that costs were sky high and I can't see any other promoter having the balls to give it a go considering the losses incurred first time round.
