Does Anyone Remember Fred Pawson? - Amended

Hi

After conversations with my Uncle I have found out the following:

The Pawson we are looking for was Ernie - a relation to Fred (not sure if he was a brother or a cousin) - his nickname - not sure whether it was just a family nickname - was 'Boy' - Fred rode for Haringey and was the 2nd string to the World Champion in 1950(?). He had to give up riding as he had a cinder go thru his goggles into his eye. My Uncle seems that Boy helped Fred get his rides in the early day's in Eastbourne!

Sorry for confusion - hope you are not as confused as me!!!

Many thanks

Linda

There is a pic here of a Fred Pawson 4th from the bottom, riding for Harringay, i also believe he rode for Poole as well. Too young to remember him!

Danny Dunton is now president of the VSRA here

I can't tell you any more than that, but i'm sure Norbold will be able to help you.

You could also try asking here

on the Vintage speedway forum.

Fred Pawson started as a mechanic at Eastbourne in 1947. He then had a few practice outings at Rye House as a rider and was signed up by Harringay in 1948. He moved to Norwich in 1951, coming straight in with a near 6 point average. He remained with Norwich until 1954. I don't think he ever ride for New Cross.

Hi to everyone who replied - thanks so much for all that information - spoke to my Dad (he is in his 80s now and memory not so good!) he remembers seeing Fred riding 'matches' at New Cross but I misunderstood and thought he rode for New Cross!

Many thanks everyone, most appreciated!

Linda

I assume he is a relation of Pat Pawson who rode for Wimbledon in the late 70's as they're both from New Zealand?
