iris123
Ken McKinlay was Scottish and rode in 56.Don't know for sure if he was the first though. Edited June 30, 2005 by iris123
norbold
Yes he was. He qualified as reserve in 1955 but did not ride. The next Scot to qualify for the World Final was Jim McMillan in 1972. Edited June 30, 2005 by norbold

iris123
Norbold,i wasn't sure if for instance one of the Aussie riders was from Scotland originally.Ron Johnson, etc
Ian
Ron Johnson was indeed from Scotland Iris. I know this to be true because Johnnie Hoskins said he was, and you can't argue with information like that. Mind you, were dear old Johnnie still in action today we'd probably have Scotland in the World Team Cup captained by Jock Kugelman.

Was just trying to cover myself.Thought he was from Scotland, although he only qualified for the 39 final, but it never took place. He also rode in the Star riders championship which was the equivalent, but not actually the World Championship. I thought if i said Ken,then someone(Norbold)would say,no Ron Johnson. If i said Ron Johnson, someone(Norbold) would say.well he didn't actually ride, just qualified Edited June 30, 2005 by iris123

A photocopy of his birth certificate appears in 1948 Stenners Supplement, page 213, with dob of 24/2/1907. Did Gordon McGregor never make the reserve berth in a World Final ? iris123
Not 100% sure, but thought 1937 World Champ Jack Milne and his brother Cordy could have rode for Scotland as their father was Scottish

First 16 went through to the British final, won by Barry Briggs who went on to win the world championship.
norbold
Well, Ron Johnson was born in Scotland but emigrated to Australia when very young and became an Australian, riding for Australia in the Test matches. It is also the case, of course, that he never rode in a World Final anyway. One of those who is always mentioned in "the greatest rider never to ride in a World Final" discussion. So whatever way you look at it, Ken McKinlay was the first Scot to ride in a World Final.
