Gambo Posted April 28, 2005 Report Share Posted April 28, 2005 NEW FORMAT AND ‘YELLOW JERSEY’ FOR 2005 FIM SPEEDWAY GRAND PRIX SERIES THE new-look world championship FIM Speedway Grand Prix Series kick-starts this weekend with the world’s top 16 riders lining up for round one - the FIM Dominet Bank European Speedway Grand Prix – that takes place at the Olympic Stadium, Wroclaw on Saturday (30th April). The 2005 Series sees a number of changes to the competition with a new format and the SGP Series’ own ‘yellow jersey’. Sixteen qualified riders will contest each Grand Prix (GP) rather than 24, as in previous seasons. Under the new format, each rider will compete against every other rider in at least one race of the 23 heats. Each rider will also start from each gate position at least once. The current leader of the world championship at each GP will wear a distinctive yellow race jacket. Therefore, for the first round in Wroclaw Jason Crump will be the first rider to wear the exclusive jacket. Whoever wins on Saturday night will be the leader of the GP Series and will don the jacket for the second round – the FIM Swedish Speedway Grand Prix - in Eskilstuna, Sweden. After 20 heats, the top 8 riders will progress to the semi-finals, with the first semi-final featuring 1st, 4th, 6th and 7th placed points scoring riders, while the second semi-final will feature the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 8th placed riders. The riders will pick their own preferred starting gate positions, with the highest scorers taking first pick with following choices made in descending points scoring order. The first and second placed riders in each semi-final will progress to the Final, with the same process will be applied to choosing gate position. The winning rider will be awarded 25 Grand Prix points, second will receive 20, third 18 and 4th 16. All other riders will be awarded the number of race points that they accumulated up to and including Heat 20. The full rider line up and draw is; 1. (13) Ryan Sullivan (Australia) 2.
